Just picked up a 85 vf500 about 2 weeks ago. Was riding it the other day and it would hesitate at certain rpms and took longer to start. So i figured i would pull the carbs out and clean them (I wrench on MX bikes all the time and didn't think it would be that hard). Anyways, i clean out the carbs and two had clogged pilots and one had a clogged main so i figured that was my problem. Put it all back back together and started it. Started right up but now it shoots up to 6k and won't drop. I see after reading up that i made the fatal mistake of takeing the plenum that holds the carbs together off. I didn't break anything but i think i did at least screw up my linkage (and apparently something else) . Can anyone help me out? I need to know how the rear linkage between the two carbs is hooked up and what could be causing it to run at 6k. I really don't want to take it to someone as i like to do my own work

Pull the carbs off, and check that all the throttle plates just begin to open at the same time (bench synch) or set up guages and try a proppa sych job. Possibly you lost a spring ??

First make sure there aren't any air leaks.

This sounds familiar. After having my carbs off I had similar behavior. The balancing screws are sensitive to very small changes, and taking the carbs off the plate affects their relative locations enough to throw them significantly out of whack. That's my theory at least. Careful syncing fixed it for me.

    More here.

Like Squirrel said, pull them back off......grab a couple of beers.....and go back over the linkage. The individual carbs should center on the manifold with dowels and then work on hooking up the linkage.....looks confusing at first ......bit of a Rubic's cube but it really not that bad if you take your time. New boots are a must and no point in installing the carbs with old boots. Pointless really. A serious waste of time.Trust me.

It was like you all said, i lost 2 springs out of the linkage. i also watched some youtube and learned how to bench tune. It purrs now. However I wasen't prepared for how much of a bitch those carbs are to get on though

Ok, after riding it a little more it still has some flat spots and the idle will sometimes stay up around 3k and not want to drop. Also it runs hot. Sounds like an air leak to me on the whole idle thing but could the carbs being too lean be the reason for the flat spots and the high temp? Im taking into a guy to get the carbs syched so i guess i'll find out but just wanted some other opinions

Try spraying carb cleaner, starting fluid, or some such around the outside of the boots while it's running. If it has any effect you have a leak.
