RWB 1996 - a winter restoration...

Great results.I have few questions since I am thinking of painting my bike in yellow with blue lines across top of gas-tank,front fairings,tail
How did you apply separate colors.Tape it off how?what type of tape? I wished you had step by step pictures of actually doing.

Looking great. I know the black is "accurate" to what your trying to match but your right with not "feeling it"... Try things that keep to tradition but add your own touch. Mabe keep it as is but a white or gold outline. Or Blue. Or just white to accent the 750 markings. Play with it. If it looks like hell, dump it.

 

@richbike: The NACA ducts are staying black. It's one of the major design cues of the RC36, and I wanted to keep that. No hugger, either - too much $$$. Thanks for spending it for me, though.

@Rubo: I did all of my taping on top of the lightest color and worked my way "up" to the darkest colors. I would paint the lightest base layer color without any masking, then after that color was dry, I'd lay out the masking for the next color layer. FWIW, mask off EVERYTHING - paint gets anywhere and everywhere you don't want it to go. With the pieces that were full of speed holes and vents, this is very critical. If you look really closely on the right tail fairing (IRL, not photos), you can see a few dark blue pearl flakes under the clearcoat on the red part of the piece. It must have made it's way through the vents on it and settled on the red when I painted the dark blue. I also highly suggest using the bright green 3M masking tape - it creates superbly clean paint lines.

Sorry I didn't do a step-by-step photo tutorial of masking for different colors, but there are probably hundreds of others who have done it and posted to YouTube.

@vfrhusband: I think that I am going to just ditch the number plate all together. I have faithfully reproduced the rest of the RC30, and this one feature of the paint job just doesn't work on the RC36. Luckily, it's just vinyl.

I just ran across this thread today and read the whole thing, and what a great story! Its great to see people stop and give all their attention to the things in life they care about instead of hiring a nanny, a dog walker, a mechanic, etc. etc. (can you tell I live in NY?) and just coasting through life like a zombie. Gotta get those hands dirty! Great job, and that 16 year old bike looks better than new! I can't wait to see the buffed out, polished, uberfinished photos!

I still want a final FINAL picture.....Your work is beautiful and worth all the cussing fussing and frustration. I think the striping SUX and would pull it unless your going for a 99 point resto bike.

I have gone through the pain that you have and I know how good it feels to get to the point after the shakedown ride.

I also went with a RWB paint scheme and still get comments about it 4 years later...
