I have finally decided to go with the VFR for my next bike. The delemia is what year/gen. I am leaving toward the 2001 with the gear drive vs the 2002+ tvec. I can not tell you why. Something is just pulling me there. I have considered MV'v and Duc's too, very sexy bikes. But the VFR seems like the best allround bike going. I have lurked around and tried to gather info either way, but when it comes down to it , ask the folks who are there now and have the experiance. Lay it on me. I need your input please!

    Thx

    Dino

That's actually a very good choice. The 5th Gen with its gear driven cams has a sound all it's own. As you said, very hard to beat the VFR's all around performance!

Both are great bikes. You can't go wrong with either one. I'd let your decision be based on what is available in your area and what kind of deal you can get. If you're open to either bike, then let "what presents iteself" be the deciding factor.

Mostly what was already said. Check prices for the rare valve adjustments both bikes need. Ducati desmo prices on Vtec's

I've owned my '00 5th gen since January. It makes lovely noises, is as fast as I can handle, and looks great. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose. Find a good deal on a vfr near you and go for it.

I came to the VFR from a Ducati 748. She had the things I loved about the Duc, single sided swing arm, hydraulic clutch, deep throaty v sound, etc. plus more rideability, cheaper maintenance, comfort, ability to do distance, etc. Love the bike!

Great and very sound advice. I do have both availabie in my area at what seens to be very good pricing. The gear drive strikes a chord in me via the old hot rodding pete jackson gear drive units, but I can also appreciate the techno advancements of the v-tec too. Still leaning for the 01'>. lowest miles good look'in reasonably priced one I can find. Of course some mod's like a smok'in exhaust system and the like would be a bonus for sure, not that I know what these would be for the VFR since I have been following the euro makes a bit closer I must confess. My brother had a 500 Interseptor back in 83', what a ride for back then, nothing like it, too many tickets later he had to sell, have never forgotten that ride. Keep the feed back com'in. Getting me syked for sure to pull the trigger!

I really like my 5th gen, but I must say that the 6th gen is a good bike too. I have ridden both. The 6th gen felt a bit more refined where as the 5th gen is a little more edgy to me.

I have upgraded the suspension on my 5th gen because I felt it was a bit too soft for my weight and my (sometimes) aggressive riding style. I certainly don't regret the money spent on that.
My only regret is that I didn't purchase the supercharger kit when they were still available.

Supercharger?......I can't even imagine...but could I? More than I would need but the cool factor would be over the top. I'll have to research this for sure. You guys are killing me!

Try and get a test ride on both. Let that play a factor into which one you buy. You may like one more than the other after getting some seat time.

I would suggest that you throw a leg over examples of the two different generations as they feel quite different. Then you will know for sure which one is for you.

Bikes with the A&A charger installed are pretty rare so I doubt that you will find one already equipped. Toe Cutter can tell ya all about his if you want riding impressions, just don't ask about his finger!!

    Here is the A&A site,

l'v had very little to do with the Gen 6, but l'v owned my 5th gen for about 11yrs and love the thing still, with just the usual servicing ,they're a bullet proof motor, they do have a few glitches with their stators and regulaters but nothing that can't be over come, and the bike lends itself easily to being tweaked to suit different rider size and ability.
