I'm going down to pick up my new 06 with ABS this week. Got a great deal on the bike but not sure if I should get the extended 5 year warranty ($800) and/or the 3 year maintenance free plan ($1500).

This is my first bike so I'm not sure as to the typical maintenace costs and repair history, etc. involved with the VFR.

I would greatly appreciate as many replies as possilbe.

    Thanks everybody, I can't wait.

I just purchased an 07. I did not get an extended warranty. I didn't feel I needed too and my dealer actually didn't want me to waste my money! It all comes down to whether or not you will be at peace with or without the warranty. As far as maintenance is concerned, contrary to what dealers will tell you, (bring in your bike for all scheduled maintenance to keep your warranty valid) is false. You can perform your own maintenance or have a reputable shop do it for you just keep a record of it in your owner's manual. You can of course take it back to the dealer but that usually means more out of pocket money from you.

The only "very expensive" maintenance issue that I'm aware of on the VFR's are the valve adjustments at 20,000 miles.

I'm also new at this and what I've told you is from what I have learned so far. Hopefully I'm not far off.

Your risk tolerance will kind of dictate the warranty thing, but I never have liked pre-paid maintenance even when we sold it as it kind of locks you in and you can't shop or negotiate labor as much. Customers didn't love it either.. Captive audience.

ALso Some don't want to refund if you move etc.. either.

Extended warranties are for suckers in my opinion, sure there are stories when it paid it self off but 95% of the time it is a waste of money, but salesmen and dealerships love to sell them because that is where the easy profit and commission comes from.

Again my opinion but usually if something goes wrong on a new purchase it's in the warranty period and if you still don't have a good feeling about the bike you can still buy the extended warranty at the end of the warranty...

It's A Betting Game, Just Like Vegas. You Are Betting Your Bike Will Break {the Amount Of The Insurance Policy}, And The Dealer Is Betting It Won't. Just Like Vegas, In The Long Run The Dealer Always Wins! Personally, I Would Bet On The Dealer. Just My Opinion! Good Luck And Congratulations!
