I was driving home and the bike died on me. I was able to safely coast it to the side of the road.

The instrument panel lights up. The fuel pump does NOT prime. The bike will crank but will not start.

Is there something I'm missing besides maybe a fuse or a bad fuel pump?

Where exactly on my bike is the fuse panel located?

    Thanks for any help!

    Beastb15....

A lot of helpful viffer riders and fixers frequent this forum, you will get some good advice, but.....

First things first.... 7 generations of VFRs to choose from. How about giving a little info before digging into the problem.

Year bike, modifications, your experience (mechanical) level.

One area I would start is with the shop manual...... If you don't have one, you should get one - if you plan to work on the bike yourself, and even if you don't, it will help you talk to whomever you have fix your bike.

Depending on the year of the bike you probably have fuses under the seat, and some under the fairing - mine are on the right side.

    And.......

depending on the year you should be able to gravity feed some fuel into it ... few things to check yeah I know you already did but just making sure... kill switch is on, side stand is up, petcock is in the on position, fuses to the fuel pump are ok,plug to the fuel pump is OK. you should get a Service manual it will tell you how to jump the fuel pump (bypass the switch) to check for fuel flow as well as to see if the pump is working correctly..

But a year and pictures would really help

Ya, I guess it would have been helpful had I posted a little more info. The bike is a 2005, no relevant modifications.

It's definitely not the kill switch or the kick stand. Petcock, I don't see how because I never turned it off. Like I said I was driving down the road and it just died on me.

I could be mistaken but I'm going to rule out a spark issue for now (the fuel pump doesn't prime when I turn the key on).

You need to check to see if the fuel pump is getting any voltage. After that check the wiring and connectors for the engine fuel cut relay, engine stop relay, and the bank angle sensor

You should also be able to remove the pump completely from the bike and apply 12v directly to it to see if it work. Do you have a factory service manual?

No fuel pump prime noise = won't start. If the bike have HISS immobiliser fitted, the symptoms you describe could be down to the key not being recognised for some reason - can you try the spare key? Otherwise I would start by checking the fuse on the fuel pump, as a pump fault would tend to appear over time and would generally give plenty of warning noises before finally giving up. It may also be worth checking to see if any fault codes are stored. refer to this video Reading Fuel Injection Error codes on a VFR800 - YouTube

Good luck and let us know how you get on

    Got the bike running!

Thanks for all the help guys. I never would have gotten it figured out if not for the service manual.

If I would have looked at the manual instead of taking of every body panel I would have saved myself 3 hours looking at the wrong stuff. Turns out I had no idea there was a main fuse under the seat, I was stuck on the fuse panel.

To solve it, I lifted the fuel tank and unhooked the fuel pump wiring harness. I tested the wiring harness for voltage. No voltage was present, so sure enough the first thing to check was the main 30 amp fuse. New fuse did the trick. Next time I'll start with the easy stuff!

Again, thanks for all the help.
