    Hi,
well my 86 vfr 700 is gonna need to make a cross state trip, at then end of spring break, one time it died for no apparrent reason climbing a hill ( I sat there and it restarted after a while, who knows I may have been out of gas as I filled it upless than half a mile up the road) so i am a bit uneasy taking it over the cascades, I had just changed the oil and oil filter too. its in good to allright shape w/ almost 36k miles on it. if I take it in to a shop for a carb tune and valve adjust what is that gonna cost, should I have tem chang the sparkies as well or is that relatively easy. I'm no mechanic but I've taken out and replaced and alternator on a mercedes 240d so I can get round a car engine at least. also are there ay guys out there in WA state that can suggest a place close to Orting/tacoma? all this would be much appreciated I assure you.
    thanks
    Ry

PS there is some rust in the fuel tank how involved is the procedure to get it out? any help or direction to another thread that answers any of my q's would be a great help

A tune up as far as I have known it is changeing the oil, sprk plugs and a can up carb cleaner in the gas tank. If there is rust in the tank you may want to add a filter and/or change the old one. If the bike dies for no reason it is usually sometimes blamed on the regulator/rectifier. It is a metal box on the left side under the cover it has 3 yellow wires going to it. If it goes bad it could fry your battery.

Brothers Honda in Bremerton does outstanding work on the V4's, just make sure Mike Valsco does the work. The valve's and tune up is $375.00 in Bremerton.

Gixxer tek from what I here does good work too, probable a little cheaper and closer to you. I'm guessing it would be a job that's around $400.00...

P.S. RVFR, would you recommend Gixxer tek?

Also carbs will sometimes close the floatvalves because of gravity at steap angles. This is usually fixed by haveing a full tank of gas. Don't know why? But if the bike dies at an angle if you level it the bike rights itself and starts back up.

Well then the bike might have dieded because of the valves closeing. I wouldn't question its reliability because of that. I would suggest doing a tune up. And if you haveing gotten the valves checked every 16k miles you might think about getting them checked out.

I adjusted my valves at 34K on '86, it was my first on that bike. It took me about 5 hrs. to complete. I also changed oil/filter, spark-plugs, fuel filter, serviced the K&N, adjusted the chain, and put a wrench on everything I could see. This was with the watchful eye of the previous owner looking over my shoulder. My bike did the very same thing I believe yours did? It was from the R/R getting very hot and melting together automotive plugs at the main junction. My battery was weak, so the bike was working very hard to catch up on the charge, that caused the over heating and melting. The battery would gather a good enough surface charge get going again for a few miles then die. I ended up taking out the fuses of unnecessary items to keep the voltage draw to a minimum to make it home. Good times on your trip and have fun!!!

interesting Lee, Mine just kept going after I pushed it up the hill, started it, and got some fuel. Hey how involved is changing the spark plugs on this thing? I would like to do it myself if I can.

Plugs are fairly easy, plan on removing the lower radiator bolts & pivoting it up for access room for the front, the back ones are simple just pull the tank.

Don't worry about asking me questions if I know the answer I will help.

If you want to change the chain you should check the sprocket for wear on it and the chain for that matter. If the sprocket shows wear on the right side on the tooth it is bad and needs changed.

If you are changeing the chain to a different model you should consider changeing the sprockets.

On the tuneup side I thought I would mention that the front spark plugs can be taken out without lifting the radiator. A Ujoint extention can be used if you have one. And they can be threaded with 2 fingers too. But be careful you can break them just as easy. I have gotten to all the plugs that way but if can take the time to remove the tank and radiator you should do it that was but it takes longer.

Being brought up on dirt bikes, you alway replace the set. But.....if the the sprockets are in good shape yet, try a new chain, just know that it will wear faster on old sprockets. I put a new set on mine last spring I believe it came to just over $200 for Sunstars & a Tsubaki chain

How do these guys sleep at night? $200 for something that should wear out and be replaced a lot like a chain should cost $50 tops.

If I remember correctly the chain was the most expensive part of the three, just over $100 & that was the cheapest one they had. I could have found one cheaper I'm sure but living in small town USA, I'm happy that I finally have a local dealer(Yamaha/Arctic Cat) so I throw them a bone now & again.
