So I have always wanted a VFR and I recently picked up a very clean 2000 VFR with 19K miles for 3200. It has a Stain Tune Slip on and seems to run and drive awesome!

I do have a couple questions..

    1) I am doing around 5K rpms at 70 or so...is that normal? The bike has a new chain and sproket and I want to be sure it is stock.

    2) It was close to 90 yesterday and around town I was at 215 temp wise and it got up to 225 at a light once. The fan had not kicked on. I called the prior owner and he said the fan kicks on around 228-230...would that be correct? I am assuming this is normal for these bikes. It is a solid, very fun bike and I ma happy with my purchase, hehe.

    Here is a pic

yes the rpm vs MPH is ok, and the temp is normal for the bike.

    Nice looking bike btw!

Congrats and welcome to the site. Good job on posting up a pic on your first post!

5k at 70mph - assume your talking in 6th gear? I don't know, because I seldom see a highway and never use 6th gear. But the sprocket should be stamped with how many teeth - I think the rear is 43 and the front is 16 as standard? Someone will chime in on that.

Temperature issues: These bikes definitely run hot, so get used to that. However, the fan is designed to come on at 221-222F, and will stay on until the bike cools down to about 212 +/-. If the fan is not coming on, check into it. Easiest thing is always the fuse. Then - silly as it sounds - make sure the fan blade can even move. I actually had mine get stuck one time from whatever - dirt, debris, corrosion. Beats me. Kept blowing fuses. By "freeing" it with my hand, its been fine ever since.

There are tons of things you can do to work on lowering your temps if it bothers you. Might depend on where you live. I'm in Jersey, so we'll have our days of 95 where I'll run 210+ all day. Then we have plenty of 70* days and I'm in the 190's. Really depends on what you prefer, but again, these bikes run hot.

Search Function on the top right will lead you to tons of threads on this subject.

PS - Nicely landscaped yard. :)

Nice bike, Congrats!! Not sure on the speed/rpms, but that sounds about right. As already stated, these bikes do run rather warm.

Thanks for the compliments guys and thanks for the info. Sounds like all is well but I am going to confirm the fan coming on. There temp gauge may not be 100% accurate either :)

I do love the bike so far. Comfy and very solid....and the sound that exhaust makes is a thing of beauty, hehe:tongue:

    But it's yellow

Welcome aboard, it is still a fine machine even if it is the slowest color.

Hehehe..It does make me want to pee when I look at it :)

Oh one other question, I know the VFR's have a history with the R/R's....I did a check on the battery and at idle I am at 11.9 volts and at 5000 rpm I see 14.1. I am going to assume that is pretty normal for this bike.....

That's normal. With hi-beam on and at 5krpm you should get 13.5-15.5volts DC.

First of all, fuck Rollin. He's from GA, still uses his fingers to count, and hasn't learned that yellow is undoubtedly the fastest color. So put him on your ignore list. :)

I'd try charging the battery on a trickle charger overnight and then re-checking your readings. Technically, each cell on a 12V battery puts out 2.1V to 2.2V. So at idle, it should really be at 12.8 to 13.2. You said yours is 11.9, which is definitely on the low side.

Make sure the bike is warmed up when you go to check at idle, and make sure your idle is 1100rpm, give or take 100. Anything less than 1000rpm at idle and you definitely get a low reading.

Also check at various intervals - idle, 3k, 5k, and hold it there for a while. There shouldn't be any fluctuation in the reading. If it reads 14.46 at 5Krpm, it should STAY at 14.46. If it drops to 13.2, then goes back to 14.6, etc. etc. that's not a good thing even if its over 12V. You want it to remain steady.

Gotcha and will do. Gonna throw the battery tender on it tonight anyway because I was starting and stopping it a bit yesterday when I got home :)

I also need to get some tires for this thing. What is the general consensus for a good tire on these bikes. I was looking at the Pirelli Angel ST's but would welcome suggestions. It has dunlop SPortmax's on it now....

You want to talk about tires?

Whats next - what oil to use? Then Religion? Then politics? A critical noob mistake in asking about tires, lol! (j/k).

But seriously - asking what the best tire is will lead to nothing but arguments. However, I think most will agree the Sportmax is a piece of shit. Get those things off of there. Then try the Angels, or Michelin PR2, or Continental R/A, or Bridgestone, etc.

First of all Welcome to The World! A lot more Yellow bikes popping up here lately. As far as tires, I just switched from Dunlops Sportmax II's to the Michelin PR2's and I like the way the bike rides and feels now, much better! I went the way of PR2's because most guys here have been reporting high mileage with good cornering traction. The PR3's are supposed to give better wet weather performance than the PR2's but we don't get too much rain in So. Cal so I went with the 2's. Since most of my time is on the highway, I'm hoping the dual compound tire will get me the mileage I need and the traction I want. Of course YMMV.

    Cheers.

Congrats on the bike! You're going to have lots of fun with that thing.

BTW, my cousin lives in GA. He accidentally lost his a little toe a while back. But he can still count to 20, he just has to take his pants off.
