Have to replace both??????

bought a stock replaced OEM stator four years ago/stock R/R lasted 20 years and adventually got me stuck. Took out the starter relay as well! Tried a few OEM Honda R/R and was un-impressed as they were not doing their job correctly. Bought a Ricks R/R and am impressed, thats just me though.

Eliminated plug from stator to R/R with soldered, heat shrink joints :smoke: Have soldered connectors to starter relay along with the stock Honda plug to R/R with no meling issues er wut ever...Bike has 78,000 miles and its a 1991 on the title.

It is a 5th Gen, thought I put that up there somewhere. Thanks for all of he info again. Going to find what I need today and get it ordered. With all of the pics and play by play info here should be easy enough to figure out. Will post up when done.

 

Before buying a new stator, I would suggest testing the old one with a simple volt/ohm meter. There should be a measurable low ohm reading between each of the three leads from the stator, and no reading from each lead to ground. If this is the case, then I would try a regulator/rectifier replacement, and see if you then have proper voltage. You may check that your battery is an all position battery, as I had charging issues with my Yuasa YTZ12S battery. I will contend that a gel or lithium ion battery is the best bet with the placement of the battery that Honda gave us, reclined with posts down low.

Just wanted to add.Honda Stator gasket has glue which kind of gets stuck there even when you removed all the stator bolts. Hit it moderate force on the side with rubber mallet and should come out.Take your time and clean the surface.Use utility knife blade.Its easier just the blade since space is tight.Don't rush and scratch up the surface.Take your time and clean thoroughly.
Honda service manual states to use sealant on wire harness rubber edges exiting the stator.I used black Permatex gasket silicon sealer from auto zone like $3 (not too much just enough to create a seal)
I made my own gasket from cereal box paper and worked like a charm.I don't recommend this but plenty of people have been using DYI paper gaskets without issues. Honda gasket is paper as well.Only issue I have is if you want to open again then you got to scrape clean that glue again which is pain.(not to mention costs 15-18 dollars)
you can buy gasket material from auto zone and make your own.This way next time you open it will come out clean and no glue to clean.
To make the gasket put some oil on the stator cover and lay over the material and once lifted you will see exactly where to cut away.Use paper punch out for bolt holes.
smear thin layer of motor oil on both side of gasket and install.Oil expands the paper and creates tight seal.Anyway besides saving some money once again there is nothing to clean next time you open your stator for whatever reason.

 

Already have the gasket coming with new stator and with luck will not have to open the damn thing again. RR showed up a few days ago, got the kit from roadster cycle that MD posted and still waiting for the stator to show up. Should arrive thursday, weather is going to be beautiful next too. FINISHED!!! The new RR and stator are in and working great, 14.5v @ 5k rpm. The install was not bad at all even with building all the wires myself. Thanks again everyone for all the help and advise.
