Is there a armored textile jacket out there that can keep me warm in 55 degress AND cool in 85 degrees? I've got a Nexgen armored jacket but when it's near 85 degrees it gets a little too warm (that jacket has no vents).

I thought about buying a summer riding jacket like this Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0

but it would be nice if I could just have one jacket for almost all conditions. Does such a thing exist? What do you all do?

This is what I have. Outer layer is a mesh jacket that will be fine for summer, if you're moving of course. For rain or down to about 50* I use the rain/wind layer insert. For colder than 50* you add a third layer, a thermal that I road in 35* air temps.

The rain/wind layer does a great job for around 50*, couple it with a long sleeve t-shirt and you'd probably handle any of the conditions you describe.

It even does a good job keeping most of the rain out if you get caught in it.

Thanks stoops. A fellow Wisconsinite! I grew up in Sheboygan. If you can ride with that jacket in Wisconsin and stay warm, I shouldn't have any problem down here in Indiana! I'm definitely going to look into that jacket. Thanks again!

I bought a Joe Rocket Alter Ego 3. It has an outer shell for wet/cooler temps, a completely vented inner main jacket (with armor), good for high temps and a liner vest to help keep warm with just vented or with outer shell too as a cold weather jacket. I have not tested it's "crash-ability" yet, knock on wood, but here in So Cal it was my main jacket last summer. It worked great too with the outer shell on, for a few "damp" rides I had in the mornings.

I have a Tour master Sonora Air which is mesh and armored. I upgraded the back armor.

Today was mid 80s and I was fine - no liners. Regular days (50-70), I add the windproof liner. Winter mornings (38-45), I add the thermal lining too.

Colder than about 40, I take the cage.

I strongly suggest you get some Underarmour Heat Gear. The hockey type. Both the long legged pants and long sleeved top. So long as you are moving and you have any type of vent in whatever you buy, you will be cool. Matter of fact, if you sweat a bit then start moving, it is like sitting in front of and air conditioner. Tourmaster......I will keep my opinions to myself on this thread so as not to ruin your thread. If you are interested, use the search engine.

I have to give a +1 to this. I love my AE3 - it's waterproof when you have the outer shell on (and has vents for when it starts getting a little warmer), and turns into a version of the Phoenix when the shell is off (and you can even fold the outer shell into it's own little backpack if you're out and about without luggage). Nicely armored, enough pockets (waterproof, too), and ridiculously versatile. My go-to jacket for the widest range of temperatures. It just plain works.

If any of you are curious, I choose to purchase a Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0. Instead of buying a 3 1/2 season jacket, I decided to save a little money by keeping my late fall/winter/early spring jacket that I already have and just buy a good hot weather jacket. Plus, being 6'2" 180# I'm a little on the thinner side and JR has Tall sizes. Got a Medium Tall and the fit is PERFECT and I tried on a lot of other jackets, many being too big in the arms.

    Late response but...

I run an Alpinestars RC-1 2 piece suit. I mainly wear the pants at the track or in cold weather. The jacket (which is leather) has been worn in temps as low as 18* and as hot as 99*. I am 6'4", 210 and was HOT, but not dying, in the 98* weather. In the cold weather I had several layers on under it:
