still got that ticking noise in the primary .little history bike sat for 12 yrs..found the clutch throw out bearing rattled -ticked when spun so i replaced that,,noise comes and goes ,,in the primary by the clutch hub,,im figuring the tranny bearing held in with a retainer plate has rusted and has a flat spot on a ball..changed out alot of stuff in the primary from another engine and noise is still there ..soooo im pulling the retainer plate after i remove the clutch assy and removing the bearing retaing plate pulling the mainshaft bearing and checking that..looks like it should come out with little effort ,,maybe a internal bearing puller to get it out..thats the only thing i havent changed..and mist likely the source of the noise..gotta chack it to be sure..anyone done this before? looks as if the made it a seviceable item the way they have it installed with a retaining plate..thanks gregg

Can't be fretting about every little noise, Gregg, unless you've got alot of free time and a comfortable place to do your work; otherwise, just keep ridin' 'til somethin' happens......

There's so much good stuff on CL, i think i'd rather buy another, newer bike than split cases.

Post up some pix when you find the bad parts.

It might be worth a try, you have nothing to lose if you can figure how to pull that bearing without splitting the case. But i have no idea how that could be done especially since the bearing is pressed on to the shaft so it won't be a slip fit. Pull the holder plate to at least get a visual inspection of the races--maybe it has a rusty patch that you can dissolve out with acid.

I think I'm having the same problem. Does anyone know if the main shaft ball bearings can be replaced without pulling the engine apart? If so, what's the trick?
