After I did my -1/+2 sprocket swap I have been trying to build up the nerve to try a full blown wheelie. I've popped the clutch a few times and had the front wheel up a few inches at most. Today, I learned how to do a wheelie... well at least hold the front wheel up about a foot for several feet.

It was easy really. All I had to do was slow down for my left turn from the main drag onto my residential street. Then after I had been stopped for several seconds waiting for oncoming traffic to clear, I checked my rear view mirror and saw a dumb ass rolling up on me at the approximate speed of 35 mph while texting on her phone.... Yea, she was that close that I could see what she was doing in my mirror.

The next part was even easier. The fear of "What if I flip my bike while attempting the wheelie" was gone. It was replaced with "OH SHIT, I'M ABOUT TO BE ASS END'D". Without thinking I rolled full throttle and DUMPED the clutch at about red line. Up she went!!! Straight as an arrow, no loss of control!!! When the front wheel landed about 50' down the road, I looked in my mirror and she was half sideways, way past where I was.

    Lessons learned:
    1. A 1st gen VF700f will do a wheelie
    2. Only going to happen in 1st gear at low speeds
    3. I doubt you can flip it, I just tried!!!
    4. No catwalking, it's only going up a foot or so at most
    5. prior to my sprocket change I could get the front end light, but never up.
    6. I will try this again, without the part of being rear ended.

What a vivid imagination you have sir, we'll need full blown video proof and you get extra bonus points for wearing a helmet mohawk LOL!! It really is a good thing you were aware of your surroundings and didn't get creamed by that texter. It really has become a terrible problem despite the few laws that have been enacted.

Fine, you've proved it can be done, which was already known and that you can do one, but don't do it again on any residential street or any other road.

Someone fooling around with wheelies on residential streets is a danger to himself and others, gives regular, normal people a distorted view of motorcyclists, and is showing off only his own immaturity.

Anyone searching utube can find Goldwings wheelie too.

Do your wheelies in big parking lots if you want to take the risks, not on the street.

Sounds like it was an oopsie test, not at all intentional. Probably saved his ass and his bike by gettin it up on the street. Had he intended to do it this may be a different story.

Forgive me for being ill experience when it comes to "wheelies", but are these bikes not supposed to be able to do wheelies? Does the bike 18" rear wheel effect the ability to do a wheelie?

More a lack of sheer HP and the stock gearing made doing wheelies a bit harder on these bikes, doubtful that it was impossible though. The OP changed his gearing such that it made it much easier to get the front wheel in the air, and just found out what it took to do it. Found out the hard way but not as hard as possible it seems.

they weren't "made to not wheelie" they are just big fat pigs.. if you redline it I bet it would wheelie in stock form.. but doing wheelies on the street ...I hate to agree with Squirrel.... do them in a P/L as far as accidental wheelies that is an oopsie....

if she was that close WOW your lucky you have cat like reflexes and were able to move out that quick...

A wheelie was actually the last thing on my mind at the time. I just knew I needed to go forward in a hurry. I did not plan on any of it, it was mostly a panic that kicked in... I just gunned it and dumped the clutch.

As far as the wheelie's on these old goats, well... I have heard a lot of people state that it can't be done (too heavy, not enough power). I have never opened it up and dumped the clutch like that before. Quite frankly, it scared the crap out of me!!

However... once off work, i just had to try it in the parking lot. Like I said, I don't think it will catwalk, but it can wheelie!!! I don't think I would make a habit of it because it can't possibly be good for the bike, but it's cool just to know I can... if I wanted to.

BTW, I agree that kind of stuff should never be done on a public roadway. Besides going to prison for killing someone, it's a great way to loose your license and the bike. It's easy to outrun the car, it's the radio that will get you.

Now, let's see if I can do a stoppie
