Carb plenum removal on 4th gen.

    The PO lost one of the air tubes (velocity stacks) on the carbs. The only way to put another one on is to remove the plenum. If I leave the carbs on the intakes/boots and remove the 16 screws/4 copper washers, can I remove the plenum without sh*t flying all over the place? I know the fuel tubes are VERY delicate and removing the plenum could produce leaks later but if a complete disassembly is in order anyway, it may be worth a try?? I have the shop manual and it shows/says to separate the carbs, you have to remove the plenum first, then the velocity tubes and so on..

    Wondering if anyone tried this carefully with any success - remove the plenum and replace it without removing the carbs from the bike?

    Yes you can do this on 3rd and 4th gen carburetors, but not 1st and 2nd.

    3rd gen have a thick plate holding all the carbs together at the bowl flanges. 4th gen uses long bolts through the carbs to hold each bank together.

    Thanks for the reply Kennybobby. I seen the bolts in the schematic and was hoping but I can hope in one hand and poop in the other. You know which one fills up first!
    I've already removed the carbs from the engine and have done a very thorough cleaning (just got it last week, 4400 miles, 1994) so it had plenty of tarnish. My old ZX-11 gave me all the carb tuning experience I've never wanted and more.
    Idle's and runs fine but nowhere near as smooth as my old 86 VF1000R so I know a balance and sync is in order when the stack gets here. I'm sure having the stack missing off one carb is causing a large part of the problem of the imbalance. Slick little addition to the carbs I must say. I'll bet they do wonders for helping with atomization of the fuel in the mixture....

    Off to my mothers house for a visit with the family. Yes, I'm taking the bike.

    Side Bar: I always thought honda shoulda made a glass gas tank so we could appreciate them velocity stacks, expensive to manufacture and produce I am sure. :rip: ole carburetors

    Buell has a clear tank, well, airbox cover actually, that i could see the single rubber v-stack inside of. Hmm, a honda v-four in a Buell XB frame. That would be crazy cool for a second bike.
