So i just grabbed an 85 vf 500f on the cheap with only 14k on the clock. Other than checking the valve clearance and other standard maintenance what should i be looking out for mechanically. Oh, the tach is the only thing that doesn't work could this just be a bad connection or stepper motor.

    Welcome lad; but :worthless:

I'm sure the answers will all be forthcoming. The baby 'ceptor is an all time favorite of mine, although I've never owned one. Color me jealous.

    :welcome:

As for the Tach, This is what I did to get mine to work: Remove the Upper fairing & unbolt the Cluster assy from the bike. Then unscrew the connections for the Tach, one at a tyme & clean the connectors. Then use Dy-electric grease & reconnect. Also use dy-electric grease at the main connector for the cluster.

    Good-Luck

You're aware that some posters say dielectric grease is non-conductive and shouldn't be used as it blocks current flow ????:potstir:

Then They should continue to refrian from using it.
I started using it back when I was trying to keep the smoke in Lucas wiring, It did pretty well Concidering what I was working with / on.
Since it sounds like Metric bikes have simular issues, Dy-electric grease is what I used on My Bike, with a positive result so far.

Dielectric grease IS an insulator, preventing electrical flow. However, if your connections are clean and tight, packing them full of dielectric grease serves to basically seal all of our wonderfully unsealed connectors from mother Honda, and also prevents most corrosion. Clean and tight are the important points though, you can skip the grease if it makes you uncomfortable

Here are the requested pics of the new to me scooter. I picked it up and immediately rode it about 90 miles back to my house. So far it seems to run like a raped ape, but i still need to pull the valve covers this weekend. I had a blast it was mostly state routes then a bit of interstate. I wont lie the speed snuck up on me a bit i looked down and found myself doing 90 at one point. I had real fun though on the b-roads though that little bugger is a hoot!!! 2012-05-15_23-03-09_440.jpg 2012-05-15_23-02-49_442.jpg 2012-05-15_23-02-04_753.jpg
