i have an 85 VF 700. now i had a big long detailed write up but i wasn't logged in and it was erased -_- OK so i know its not a fuel problem already resolved all off those i think. OK i now think its a R/R problem but have no clue. it only does this on occasion ill be riding along and my bike will die as if it were starving for fuel. now what makes me think its the R/R. my bike died and batt was dead. i got it home charged the batt fired up ran fine checked at the batt with a multimeter it read 14.xx (i dont remember the exact reading) this was at 3500rpms + - 150. i went through my wiring i found that the R/R wasnt plugged in all the way (big white-ish connector) so i cleaned the terminals and plugged it back in it ran fine for about 50 or 60 miles over the past 3 days. and when i left class i got about 100yrds down the road and it acted if it was starving for fuel again then died shortly after. one thing i forgot to mention is when i notice it start to run rough i have to keep it runnin above 4500rpms or itll stall. like its only starving for fuel on the low end. this is only when i come to a stop when im moving the R's are at about 2500-3500 but ive got the throttle completely open....any pointers suggestions??

It sounds like the pilot jets and/or the mixture ports are clogged. Has it set up for more than 3 weeks with alkyhol fuel?

Look for rust in the fuel tank. It's best to thoroughly drain and flush the tank of water, debris, rust, etc. once every year.

Check that the filler cap vent is clear.

Check the volume of fuel flow with a fullish tank through the fuel filter (if you have one) into a bucket. It should put out a steady, full flow without any trickling or slow-downs.

According to the evidence you've provided, you just might have 2 problems at once. r/r or bad connections if the battery keeps dying and fuel system issue as well ?

Will your bike reach a high speed like 100 mph if you go for it ??

ok earlier today i pulled the carbs and cleaned the jets the pilot jets were some what clogged i got them all cleaned out. the bowls had like a rusty looking residue on them so i cleaned them all out. and yea when its running fine yea itll hit 100+ very easily but wen it starts running rough it wont rev up quickly untill about 5500k but thats free revving. under a load it wont rev barley at all, if it does its choppy like it cuts in and out. before i pulled the carbs i started it up seemed to run fine for ab 5 min then sputter sputter choke choke sputter die i checked the voltage at the batt right after it died it was 13.xx volts so it seemed as if it was charging ok. i havnt yet put the carbs back on. well because it was hot and i was frustrated.
