I have been watching this site since last ridding season, but I've just now gotten registered. I purchased a 86' 700F w/the red/white/blue colors... It has been a good buy so far, however it needs some minor work on the tank and plastic. A friend has access to a paint booth and wants to redo it for me for the price of paint... Problem is that I'm really new at this and know nothing about the value of these bikes other than I enjoy ridding it. We were thinking of laying a Black pearl where the white is, and keeping the factory stripes but paint them in Kandy Marble instead of vinyl. He's also pretty good w/an airbrush and wants to highlight all the edges... and of course match the helmet...

My only reservation is that I know this bike is a classic, at least around here (Ft Campbell, KY). I'm just worried we might be ruining the bike by making it other than stock.

    Thanks for the advise guys.

I am not sure about ruining the bike as long as the colors go together. I have seen other VF/VFR's painted non-original colors and they looked alright. All in all, the final decision is up to you. I have considered painting my 93 VFR blue, but it's just too much work as well as I like the white cause you don't see many, especially here in KY. I have thought about blue accents or stripes tho.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't worry about the "classic" issue in terms of matching the paint. The older VFRs are classics, but not in the way that a 69 Camaro is a classic. In the case of the Camaro, it's always more valuable if it's restored to its original luster, including colors, wheels, etc. But as long as you don't make the bike look tacky, I think a nice custom paint job will only enhance the value. To be honest, I haven't heard many people post "man, I really want to buy that bike, but I wish it was the original color".

I definitely recommend taking before and after pictures and posting them on VFRworld. :)

Thanks for the advice... He stopped by and layed out some lines on it yesterday, and came up w/some new ideas... Instead of keeping the orginal lines, we're gonna paint it with a black pearl base and then follow the line of the vents in the front cowl, onto the tank with a gun metal silver w/marbleizer... touch it up w/shadow red airbrush. I'll be sure and post before and after pics...
    thanks guys,
    James
