I know the chain thing has been done to death but I have a specific issue. My chain is absolutely fried. Although my sprockets appear to be in good shape, I want to replace them, but I wanted to drop a tooth up front and maybe up a couple out back... The issue is... As far as what I've found, my stock sprockets are 16/45, so I'm looking for a 15 front sprocket. All of the places I've checked say that they only make them in 16-18, is this true? I'm also going to try the local bike shop tomorrow. Also, can anyone explain the chain numbers? Obviously the length is self explanatory but the other number I don't understand.

They don't list anything older than 1990. Mine specifically is an 86 750f.

I'm going to be your new best friend...... I have recently done what you are about to attempt! -1 / +2. I had to dig and hunt for this information, but I'll just give it to you everything (well, the information anyway). I have a 85' VF700F.

First off, everyone is going to tell you that you will give up some top speed - you will. However, you will get to your top speed a hole hell of a lot faster! RPM's in top gear seem to be approx 1k for every 10 MPH (ie: 60MPH = 6,000 RPM).

Front sprocket (JT brand 15 tooth): They don't market them for sales in the US (You might find a no-namer, but I didn't). Contact Bike Alert Inc. at 770-948-8880. They will order the JT 15 tooth (Part #JFF339.15) from their warehouse in England. The sprocket cost $8.77 US plus shipping to the US, then shipping to you... total is about $39.88. Took about 5 weeks for this to arrive.

Rear sprocket (JT brand 46 tooth): This was a little hard to find. Got it at Lytle Racing Group LLC at 480-966-9595. Total with shipping was $51.20. Only takes about a week to arrive.

Now a 15 Tooth is very rough on chains (research told me this) so make sure you run a high quality chain. I used a DID O-ring. I believe it was 110 tooth, same as factory length. I don't remember how much it cost, about $115.00 - $125.00. Got it at my local Honda Dealer.

Easy swap out once you got the parts..... ALMOST! There is always a catch.

Stop by Wal-Mart and buy a new grinding stone for your Dremel. You will need to "clearance" some of the metal behind the front sprocket. I got to figure this out myself. Due to the front sprocket being smaller than factory, the sprocket itself will fit, but the chain links on the back will rub. You will have to do this part at your own risk. I did it and so far no problems. I have no idea how thick the metal there is. I removed approximately 1/16" - 1/8" of metal where the chain was hitting. If you decide to run the 15 tooth, you WILL have to clearance the metal.

    Good luck!

Thanks for this info. I have already ordered a new 16 tooth and 46 tooth rear. I will keep this in mind for later because the new sprockets and chain I ordered wiped out my play money.

I installed my 1 up rear sprocket today with a stock replacement front sprocket and I have to say, I'm fairly disappointed in how it rides. I was expecting more of an acceleration increase. I also didn't use 112 links like most places said I would. I used the stock length 110 links and the wheel is a little more forward than stock but not by much. 112 links was way too close to the end of the adjusters.

Sorry bro, +1 on the rear will not be noticeable difference from stock. I believe 1 in the front is equal to about 2 in the rear - someone will chime in and correct me (but I'm close).

15/47 is a good combo. Ran that myself back in the day. A bit busy on the highway but fun.

When shopping for front sprockets keep in mind that gen1-gen6 are all the same.
