Going out on a limb here, this is my first post and I've recently purchased a 1987 VFR from a friend. I'm looking into getting a good helmet and found this one that I like on ebay Full Face "TMS" Motorcyle helmet | eBay

There's no listed model number but at the bottom he claims the helmet retails for over $160. I've searched and searched but I've been hard-pressed to find a TMS helmet anywhere on the web that retails anywhere near $160. Does anyone know what model this helmet is? Is it really worth what he claims it is? What should I be looking for when purchasing a motorcycle helmet?

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Helmets are probably the most important part of your gear. Do yourself a favor and do some serious research on helmets. Everyone has an opinion, and everyones grape is shaped differently.

Read about it. the TMS helmets I saw online were under $50... ONLY DOT certified. There are SHARP ratings as well as SNELL ratings out there. I owned 1 Fulmer helmet when I was 18, and that lasted about 6 months when I bought my first Shoei. its all about how it fits and its safety rating.

wind noise and cool graphics are lower in importance to me personally.

I wouldn't recommend buying a helmet on ebay - or even on line without prior experience with the fit of the brand, etc. I would recommend finding a good motorcycle store nearby where you can try on the helmets. Look for the DOT and other certifications, and read reviews of the helmets on line. If you do purchase it on line, pick a vendor with a good return policy, and call them for fitting advice. A well designed helmet that fits well can help you have a good riding experience, while a poor fitting or poorly designed helmet can make you miserable. Lots of the good local stores try to have fairly competitive pricing because of the on line market. Failing that, try cycle gear, bike bandit, or one of the many other reputable on line vendors with good reviews. Congratulations on your "new" bike. Good Luck!

If this is your first bike and first good helmet then get thee to a shop and try on helmets. New buyers of full face helmets tend to buy a helmet that fits too loose since one that fits best has to be snug, and that can be perceived as being too small/tight. You shouldn't be able to wobble the helmet around when you have it on. If you can grab hold of the chin bar and move the helmet any on your head, it's too big.
