    Electrosport R/R...(pictures added)

I am considering ordering a R/R from Electrosport. The part number listed for my '87 VFR is the same they sell for a '98-'00 VFR800.

My only real concern is the connector blocks. I've heard of some people getting R/R from these folks that don't plug in. Does anyone know if these connector blocks are the same? I don't feel like making my own connectors (extra time and money).

    Thanks

As long as the terminals are the same you can removed the plug from your existing r/r & switch it over to to the new r/r. I have to do that on a lot of the aftermarket gadgetry on the semi's I work on. Figuring out how the terminals unlock will be the hardest part of the ordeal. Or just get a hold of some male/female blade connectors w/ heat shrink & wire it up that way.

They advertise it as fitting with the OEM connectors, but I am skeptical after searching for information on Electrosport/Electrex stuff.

When I spoke briefly with them on the phone yesterday they mentioned the part being recently upgraded and beefed up to prevent the specific VFR charging system problems.

I am really stuck on going w/ them or OEM after all the mixed reviews I'm reading.

I got an Electropsport r/r for my 93. It plugged right in. Point of note: the heat sinks on the Electrosport unit are not as big as on the Honda unit. But I cannot say whether the Electrosport is affected in the same way the Honda unit is. I haven't run mine yet and I think my Honda r/r may still be good.

Well I called and spoke with their tech support again today. They were actually really helpful. They offered to have me email them a picture of my connectors and they compared it to the unit. They said it looks the same.

They also said this particular unit just got upgraded and newly stocked within the last week. Longer heavy gauge wiring and a more robust unit overall. They said it should be bulletproof. They also said they would honor the warranty even if I had to modify the connectors.

I was sold. $124 shipped to my door and they are same state so I should have it tomorrow. I will try to post a picture up before I install it.

Oh, and their testing flowchart was helpful too. I used it to reaffirm that my RR is bad.

I just checked Service Honda and they have the OEM unit (for a 90 - 97, might be the same as yours) for $116.37. Thats way cheaper than they used to be.

Service Honda price for my bike was $144 + shipping. In fact Honda Parts Direct was even better at $142 + shipping.

I would have liked the OEM part too, but I'm taking a chance with the Electrosport one.

    1. They treated me right on the phone
    2. Their price beat my best OEM price
    3. No warranty on OEM, 1 year on the Electrosport
    4. They are local to me so I will have the part in one day - less downtime

If I have problems you guys will be the first to know!

I got the Electrosport RR installed. I am extremely satisfied with the quality of the unit! It is beefy, with a huge heatsync and heavy gauge wiring. It was plug and play for the connectors. Charging like a champ now!

Here are some pictures compared to the old RR:

    electrosport rr

I just last month bought a Electrosport RR for my 98 VFR and when it arrived I tried the connectors and they do fit. You have to align the actual terminals in one connector to make sure the wire connectors inside line up, no big deal, but the other issue I ran into is that the harness is too short to mount it to the factory mount ( about two inches short on one of the harnesses). I am contemplating remounting it under the tailsection anyway so I am just going to lengthen the harness.

I also just checked here locally on the price on the factory updated unit and it was 199.00 plus tax.

Thanks Ken. Does your unit look identical to the one in my picture? If you bought yours a month ago you may have recieved one of the older versions. I spoke with Electrosport and they said one of the upgrades to the newer versions was longer wires. Mine had plenty.

    R&r not up to par

I'm glad your situation w/ Electrosport worked out.. Mine did not. Not only did the rr last only a couple of days and leave me stranded  but it wasn't the exact match at all... My rr that i bought had no connectors with it and i was told i had to put my stock ones on.. That blew!! also the wires were shorter than stock and had to be re-postioned, not cool as well. It also had a wire missing that went into where it connects to the battery connector and i was told that it wasn't needed, " it's only for accessories".. So after that cash was blown i opted for an OEM one from RONAYERS, It's an exact match with bigger fins and the right connectors... I guess lesson learned, Only OEM for electrical stuff from now on!!!

    Jason 01vfr now running:smile:
