front fork fluid

    hi all
    doing a fork rebuild on a 1987 vfr,does any know the correct amount of fluid to refill the legs.

    Right leg 12.6 imp oz (358cm3), left 13.0 imp oz (370cm3).

    It's usually best, after adding the quantity or oil recommended, to move the forks up and down several times with the springs out to distribute the oil, then use the factory recommendation of setting the level at 6" below the top of the tube.


    BTW, for best results, you need to disassemble fork internals and wash out damper rod assembly seperately and thoroughly.....which simply adding fresh fluid won't accomplish.

    Its odd, but the fliud used is regular automatic transmission fluid, ATF.

    From factory true or at least the weight of ATF=7w. Use 10w and you'll like it better.

    I 've never doing oil change for front forks, so just curious that why different oil qty requirement btw right and left leg?

    Because of the internal differences of the forks. Like mine, one has anti-dive and the other an adjuster for compression dampening.
