Apittslife: That is a crazy story.

I guess the crash wasn't really "bad" enough for me to think about getting seriously hurt, as silly as that sounds. My wife is pretty upset ("You could have been killed!") but I just don't see how that would have been possible in the circumstance. Probably my naivety though. I honestly thought I'd be that rare motorcyclist who went his whole life without crashing. Defs taking the MSF advanced course and replacing my old (but undamaged) gear asap, I've been putting that off for years.

I'm starting to come around to the "walk away" idea you all advise. Although I already have leads on lots of parts, and putting an F4i front end and RC45 body work on it might be cool, if it's a salvage title I don't think it's worth putting money into at all. What do you think I should do with the totaled bike? The engine and drivetrain should be fine (w/ 5k miles on them). On the other hand, I was recently thinking about getting a track day bike... I know most guys don't track the VFRs, but what do you think about that idea?

As for another motorcycle, I'm hopeful, but doubtful I'll get enough from his insurance to replace the bike. I have some leads on other 97 VFRs already, but without closure from the ins. co. I can't move on that.

Although I love the 94-97 styling, what do you think about a VFR800 in stead? I think they're ugly as sin, but there are actually, OMG PARTS AVAILABLE for it still :hss:.

Take the check, grab new gear, get another bike. It's always hard to walk away from a bike you fell in love with, as clean as it was, but look for another one. Be lucky you can walk away. Do get the lid replaced, as suggested before.

I wouldn't even consider putting it back together. If that is the bike you love, look around on sites like this and VFRD for someone selling the same thing. They are out there. Use search tools like crazedlist.org and similar to search all the craigslist sites out there. Redoing that bike is cost prohibitive. If you can sell any of it for anything, do it. I didn't read all the posts so maybe you had full coverage...if so, take whatever they offer and run. That's my opinion anyway...
