Just bought a 86 VFR , and I`m planning to do a few track days as well as ride it on the street, the guy I bought it from said a up grade to 90-91 carbs would help it breath, is that the best idea? any tips would help, thanks Paul (P S where is the best place to find parts?)

033_33_vfrside_ir_EW.jpg Best idea is to ride the bike as you got it for a season, then consider some changes based upon what improvements you think you need.

Unless you're a nutter, that bike is in no way lacking for speed or acceleration in its stock form, as you will discover !

The magazines tested the bike when new at 145 mph top speed, you need more than that ?? And it sounds even faster in Canadian numbers !!

Why does anyone need power they can't really use ?? Hayabusta?: you a poseur, Bro, ain't got the skillZ to handle half the power !

Gen 3 carbs will not fit, 86-87 only.

+1 to this response, with the possible exception of the exhaust (you can do that; but then you should re-jet to take advantage of the added flow). Especially if you're contemplating track work of any kind, the OE wheels do not lend themselves to track-worthy rubber. Thanks to the previous owner, mine has 17" CBR wheels at both ends and good (sticky) tires, a Fox twin-clicker in back and Sonic springs w/RaceTech Gold valves up front. That's what you'll want for track work, and it makes the bike more fun on the street, too.

X2 to Wheel swaps and suspension upgrades.

Just make sure she's running well. Exhaust is always good but good luck finding any.

Sounds like the previous owner was a bit of a knob.

That's about all i'd want to do for my '86.............if i had any money and it was my one and only bike !

Someone could ride faster with that better setup, but who needs to ?? Hell, yes, 4 or 5 times every summer i do love get on a fine long stretch of interstate during perfect conditions, pin the VFR throttle, tuck in and hold on tight for 3 or 4 miles, but i sense it's WRONG and IMMORAL some how, some way, i guess, maybe, and no real adult should so indulge unless they're a lawyer or a fuckin' cop, or a rich foreign diplomat and can get out of anything.

(Who can tell the old Squirrelman's been drinkin' his beer again ?)

Trackdays ?? Any 600 from the last 17 years is faster, so you need to remember you're riding a classic by your own choice, not a contemporary.

Front end and wheel swap is the best upgrade you can do for this bike by a long shot.

So does this mean that you advocate riding at imprudent, illegal speeds, my esteemed friend ?? Once a long-term rider knows just what a stock VFR is capable of and what its limitations are and where it needs improvement and how much that would cost........it's time to consider selling and stepping up to a newer, better bike, isn't it, if someone requires improved performance, eh ?

Why do people buy bikes that they think need immediate improvement rather than simply buying better bikes ??

It is a gen2 for gods sake. The only short coming is the suspension........As good as a late model bike witht the upgrade and will last longer.

No other 86 holds it's value like a VFR. A worthwhile investment I say.

What, did you grow up in Kintucky ??

Please, for the benefit of ecology, buy your meat at at a reputable supermarket chain that will not disrespect nature like squirrewrls. Safeway has refused to sell squirrwerl, so consider the moral implications.

How misguided would someone need to be to eat a cute, harmless aminal that's more intelligent than 1/3 rd of the US population, Florida especially ?

Please don't claim you'd eat my best friend !

I have to say switching to CBR tires would not be worth the money to yield the performance difference between bias ply to radials. Plus you have to adjust for the ride height and geometry difference that occurs. The only real reason to change is the larger pool of brands of tires to choose from.

Too much money for too little performance gain in my mind. If you are worried that your tires are the thing holding you back, it is not your tires.

New rear shock and front springs, absolutely do that.
