    Hello,
I recently (2 days ago) purchased a 2003 800. The bike only has 68** miles on it. The bike ran great when I test drove it before buying it. Since having it home it will not hold an idle, chokes out when I try to pull off and has no power if I rev high rpms to take off, and also blows white smoke the whole time. I really appreciate any help, as I am completely lost and bummed about recieving a "lemon". Please help and THANKS in advance!

    Corey

white smoke? could be antifreeze or on occassion oil can smoke white. Does it have an odor? Check, make sure it's not over filled with oil, although that wouldn't really cause a significant loss of power. See if there's any coolant overflow / reservoir levels.

Generically, black smoke is 'worn engine' oil burning. but at 6800, I doubt that's the case.

I don't have as much knowledge on EFI bikes but I know on carbs, a vacuum leak will cause difficult idle and "choking out". Hope someone else can add a few nuggets of knowledge too.

    Hi Corey,

Smoke is never a good thing as I'm sure you know. If you got it from a dealer, take it back and have them sort it out. If that isn't and option, you need to start looking for the issue. Pull the fairings so you can open up the airbox and pull the spark plugs. Look for blockage in the intake and any signs of coolant in the cylinders. A compression check would be a good idea at this point as well. It really sounds like a head gasket failure but that is a pretty rare event with the VFR. Look for air bubbles in the coolant reserve tank when the bike is running as the pressure from the combustion chambers can pressurize the cooling system. Also look for signs of coolant in the oil. It will be milky white.

Keep us posted on what you find and take pictures if possible.

    Good luck brother!

Could you have gotten water in the fuel, from parking it outside or overzealous washing? Or just a missing/bad fuel tank cap gasket? Or did you put some diesel, or E85, or kero in it by accident? Look for the simple fixes first before you start panicking about a blown head gasket. Which I do admit it does sound like. . .
