Cant quite figure out where and when it does it most. Seems to be very random. Some days are worse then others. No noticeable lack in performance but def not normal. When I come to a stop at a light or whichever I notice a rattling ticking sound off and on. Has anyone else had this problem?

Have researched the sound and have come up with it being a cam chain tensioner. Has anyone had a tensioner replaced?

cam chain? I've got a '99 (new to me) that has that weird rattle, but its there and then its NOT... I was told flapper or clutch plates. However I have just over 20k on the bike and only been riding it for 2 weeks really so now I've added the cams as a possibility since I don't think the guy got it serviced...

'99s would have the gear driven cams, and do not have the vtech valve system. '02 and up vtech VFR 800s have chain driven cams. My bike has less than 2k, so I have not had to do any internal engine maintenance. Perhaps one of our more experienced members may have more/better information. By the way, you really need to include more information- Miles, modifications, your mechanical skill level, etc. when it comes to asking for help. This gives the Forum members an idea of how to direct you to fix something. Good Luck - hope you get it figured out soon.

Hey sorry Im new to this but thanks for the input. Bike is an 02 with 60,000km on it. Valves were last checked at 50,000km. Im not a mechanic but feel very comfortable working on my bikes. I have heard that this noise could be coming from the top cam chain tensioner as it does not recieve a lot of lubrication unlike the bottom tensioner which is fully submerged in oil. My last oil change I switched to Mobil 1 MX4T 10w-40 and noticed this random ticking or rattling. Im wondering if this oil is not doing a good enough job. Never heard of a tensioner with even minimal lubrication behaving this way. Any ideas

It could be coincidence that the noise developed after the oil change, but it wouldn't hurt to change the oil again and switch back to what you were using before.

I think I will change it back to the Honda oil. What type of oil are you using?
