    Hi,
For many years my vf1000r would start fine since it was on a battery tender but if I rode the bike and turned if off it would not start again. Bought a new battery, same issue. It seemed that when the bike was hot it would not start, let it cool for a couple hours and it would barely start. What do you folks think? Stator??

Take look at your RR connector. Melted?=your f$%cked. Good shape = Measure voltage at battery, should be getting 13v-14vish at idle upto 15ish+ above something like 3k or so I think. Lower voltage = your f$%cked..............Change the Regulator/Rectifier (RR) Most likely. Check voltage and get back to us.

    Okay Grey,

I replaced the RR and the battery. I tested the battery before starting and it registered 12.6. I started the bike for the first time in about two years and at about 2500 rpm it registered on the battery 13.45.

Am I good?? I believe I am! You're awesome thanks.

BTW- The RR looked perfectly fine just a little dirty on the smaller wire harness.

Sounds good to me. May want to ride it to operating temp and check again just to be on the safe side before straying to far from home.

Go for a ride, and when you get back plug the battery tender in. If it has to charge the battery (for more than a minute or two), you still have a problem somewhere in the charging system.

May be time to remove starter, disassemble and clean with contact cleaner. All of my 1000's have exhibited that symptom. Excessive brush dust upped the resistance of the starter. Reared it's ugly head when hot. Even if it's not the main culprit, I'll guarantee your starter needs a bath. While you're in there, take an eraser to the armature (yes, just like your slot car) and sand your brushes a little (if they don't need replacing).

After all these years my 750 is starting slower when hot. It might be time to pop the starter.?

    Thanks Guys,

I failed to mention that I replaced the starter last year in my two year journey to get the bike running again. I'll change the oil and fluids this weekend and let you guys know if all is good. Thanks again everyone.

Maybe check the resistance in the heavy gauge wires from the battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter. I've seen some pretty nasty ones that looked ok but were heavily corroded on the inside robbing precious energy producing heat from high resistance. Doesn't really explain the "when the bike is hot" aspect entirely, but things change a lot when everything around them is very warm.
Just something else to eliminate as a contributing factor.
