In my book it says to check the lifter spacers every 18,000mi. But this is a chain driven cam smacker n not one of those sensitive hydraulic setups. I can't think of asingles time I did that on my car n the 04 vtec interceptor runs fine so I ask you who know more than I;is checking the valve shims every year really necessary? Seems like over kill to me. I'm at 20,000 mi n it seems fine so far. Am I running a huge risk?

    Thanks!

checked mine at 18,889 miles and four lobes were all out of spec. What's worse, they were tight which means continued operation would have risked burning up a valve or scoring a lobe. Many people check them and they are ok but the consequences are steep if yours ends up checking like mine did.

Huh? What do you mean "tight"? All I know about it is that you take off the valve cover, pull the cam n buckets to measure the little shims against their markings. So, it's not that easy or something? Do tell! I guess that's what I'll be doing next weekend :-/

am sure there's a thread that shows the procedure on a vtec. I hear is sucks bigtime. Hopefully someone will be along shortly to provide a link. Otherwise search the 6th gen forum or the Mechanics Garage for "valve lash inspection" and other similar terms.

Just had mine done. Replaced 2 lifters but that was after a hard 54k miles of which 30k was mine and I don't think the previous owner ever changed anything but the oil. Bike runs smooth as butter now but not a drastic difference in power or anything. It actually feels a little less powerful if that makes any damn sense.

I think I'm going to skip it, but I've already had my bike 3/4 apart just to get to the plugs. There is a lot of work to get to them, so be prepared to take it in the wallet. I don't beat it, I don't pin it that much, or keep it there. Yeah, I'll run 80 or so on the open road, but usually at the limit is all I'll do.

Well I throttle fcuk mine so I think I'll get her did. I found a shop that'll do it for $350. Kinda steep but better than effing it up on my own. I've done a bunch of mechanicry but never engine work. This ain't where I wanna start. Thanks for the help guys!

$350 is a good price for a Vtec engine. Tell them you want a report on what the lifter gap measures for each valve. That way you can track wear on the next inspection. Further - It's a little insurance to help ensure they actually do the job.

May also want to have them put sparkplugs in it as they are already there

Way ahead on the plugs but thats an excelent idea w the valve check report. I imagine someone might halfass something but it never even occured to me they might just skip it all together. Funny, i had two mechanics turn me down flat on this job but this is a new shop is in a high rent spot. I figure they need the biz :) I'll post their findings.

yeah that's a good price for sure. Book says 7 hour job. Mine cost $700ish OTD but that is at CA labor costs which was $500+ of that charge with 6 hours spent doing it. Parts are cheap even if you have to replace lifters as they are like $30ish each give or take.

So, heh, ive now had a third mechanic turn me down. His first question was "do you have any idea how expensive that is?" he then went on to tell me he didnt want to do it and that i should probably "blow it off" considering how reliable that motor is. Ive always thought a "reliable engine" is only as relaible as its owner. its not like you guys are making money off my getting it checked... Wtf? Dude's supposed to be among the best in my city. Im still getting it looked at. UNLESS.... Ok, which one of yall is a bike mechanic in Austin? confess!!!
