Okay so this is 2012 and I thinking about buying a vfr800 from an online source without even sitting on one for my son. He is 6'4" and away at college. i need to know if this machine would fit or could be easily adapted for a taller rider. Any and all thoughts appreciated. I ride a CBRXX Blackbird and I'm looking for something for him to ride along with me that isn't a full bore crotch roccket/race bike. He needs some experince and the VFR800 sounds like a great machine.

    Thanks for all feedback!

Welcome to the world. We require pics of either your bike or scantily clad women. Its prerequisite. Anyway...

I'm 6' 2", so a little shorter than your son, but I find it pretty comfortable. With my bad back, I can still do 400 mile days. That's nothing for some people, but I view it as an accomplishment considering some days I can't even walk.

Has your son ridden before? The VFR is a great machine, and I understand that being this tall we don't want to be on some little 250 to learn. Our knees would be touching our titties. While its not a crotch rocket, its no slouch either. You can still get yourself into plenty of trouble - sometimes in a good way!

I never discourage anyone from buying a VFR as a first bike or learner, but several people will. Its heavy, so unless your son is 6' 4" and 150#, he should be fine in being able to maneuver it and hold it up. Obviously, being a full fairing bike, if you drop it, it gets expensive to repair.

The Suzuki SV might fit him well, also. And that's a little bit more on the naked side. Honda CB900? Just a couple of other suggestions.

I don't think he'd be disappointed in the VFR, and the great thing about these bikes is they last forever and you can continue to "grow" into it. Great bike to go out cruising around and learning the basics. Step it up a little when you start getting into some "sportier" riding. Progress into some suspension upgrades and a few other tweaks and you have a machine that can keep up with some of the best of them out there.

Good luck either way and keep us posted.

Well I'd like to see him get more experience on a bike that is a little bit slower than one that goes to 175 mph!

Maybe that's my insecurity - I was 19 once and know how slow a Blackbird relly is. My thought is 150mph VFR is still safer than 175mph on a slow bird! Thanks for your input.

At the gathering we have yearly, we have VFR riders from 5'4" to 6'7 or so... Everyone seems to think it's about the best compromise that can be had. A lot of taller guys throw heli-bars on it, and a few put buell footpegs on it to drop them another half inch or so. I'm 6'1" and have ridden my 5th gen with shorter 4th gen bars, and taller heli bars. As far as a sporting type bike, it's ok. Those big adventure bikes are probably more comfortable, and less dangerous for a n00b, though. Like maybe a used suzuki v-strom. It's a bit slower and might make a good starter. I remember it sits a bit high in the saddle.

The seat probably makes more of a difference to comfort than anything, though.

Definitely get it. I am 6'4" (and change) and a bigger guy and the ergos are great...I did end up putting heli bars on it, though but that's a small change to a great bike. The bike also came with a sergeant seat and adjustable levers, so there's that, too...

to add a bit, it's a FANTASTIC bike, but a starter bike? Assuming the kid is responsible, it doesn't matter what you put him on but since there is so much bike under you on the VFR800, it gives you the ability to go a little crazy and possibly get in some trouble, like others said. I still recommend it, but I learned on an old ninja 250 and a kawa 440 and it made me respect the power of the VFR when I finally got it...just my 2 cents...then again, buying a little bike just to learn will, as someone said put your knees in your titties at our height. Go with the VFR...he (and you) won't be disappointed...

Yes, the VFR will fit a 6'4" rider, I'm one, almost got a CBR1000RR but it is a tiny bike. I got the foot peg lowering adapters but yet to install them. The stock handle bars are fine for my size, kinda like the lean angle.

I'm 6'10" and fit just fine on my new to me 99 vfr 800. I think it's the perfect balance of power and comfort, very easy to ride.
