Vent container and collector muffler full of oil...

    I just purchased an '84 500 that hasn't been run in quite some time. I got it to fire for a few seconds on ether and it sounded healthy, but upon disassembly, I found that the crankcase vent container was about half full of oil, and the collector muffler has maybe 2 cups worth of oil in it... I'm praying that it's just from possibly being laid on its side at some point during its storage, mostly because I would think that if it were due to a faulty piston ring(s), the muffler would get hot enough to burn that oil out and not allow it to accumulate... any ideas?

    Drain everything, change the oil, and run it. May take a while to burn the oil residue left in the exhaust and hopefully it stops smoking... eventually.

    Rings are typically responsible for smoking while running (allowing oil into the combustion chamber from below). Valve stem seals usually give you smoke at start up and then improves (allowing oil to trickle down into the combustion chamber from the head while sitting). That seams like more oil than would be sitting in the pools near an exhaust valve stem, but idk, maybe.

    Just shooting from the hip. Sure someone else will chime in eventually. But I would drain, change and run... and cross your fingers.

    Sounds like you've got some carb work to do as well though, eh?

    Well upon further restoration of the bike, I went to do a compression test and realized there was zero compression on one of the cylinders. I looked at the plug, and it was all smashed up. So, you guessed it, hole in the piston. Awesome right? Luckily the guy I bought it off of has a spare and was nice enough to work with me and he's gonna switch motors with me.. As far as carbs, they've been torn down and completely clean and inspected and are ready to go.
