just went thru all the valves again nuthin there to point to the sounds im hearing ..engine does not make the primary ticking untill its warmed up to temp..and does it at all rpms consistent with the revs...pulling clutch in doesnt matter..checked the starter rollers, changed out the rollers and the springs, sound is still there.checked backlash drive gear nuthin obvious...what is weird is the noise does not appear untill its warmed up like the oil is thinner new oil filter and honda oil....gonna pull the clutch basket and inspect the bearings....super quiet when cold sounds like a real loose valve adjustment..but they are all in spec.and the stethiscope shows the valve train is quiet primary is ticking..and this noise started all at once one day on a ride..seems the oil getting warm and thinned out then the ticking starts...thing is driving me nuts more later after another teardown of the primary and inspection..gregg in ohio

im suspecting a roller bearing or needle bearing in the primary side this bike set for almost 15 yrs..there was some rust residue in the bottom of the primary case mixed in with some oil..after the first oil change after getting the bike..thinking a bearing somewhere has a rough spot ..the easiset one i can see to inspect is the trans output shaft behind the clutch basket..and all the needle roller bearings in the basket..they would be the last ones to get oil being in the center of the basket..with centrifugal force throwing the oil outwards...doesnt sound like a rod bearing.....gregg

Could the ticking just be the cam gear noise? I don't remember bearings making ticking noises.

my 86 has the same symptoms... everything is in spec but it has a sound like a valve out of adjustment.... try doing a carb sync. someone told me that might get rid of it( I haven't done one on mine yet butt Possibly in a few weeks...)

removed all carbs inspected the jets ..reinstalled checked sync spot on..checked timing to see if it was too advanced pre ignition timing lite showed proper timing and advance.aok there .valves double checked..doesnt sound like a rod bearing ..or a crank bearing..now could be a wrist pin but it started all at once..sound is comming from the primary...and i hate the anti backlash gear system..all the racers used to throw that stuff away they didnt care ,,less to break and lighter bike ..figure somewhere a bearing with a spot was rusted from sitting and broke off and now its chattering when the oil gets warm and thin,,ive got all summer to figure it out ill ride the 86vfr700..instead..gregg in ohio

well tore down the primary and found the clutch rod bearing on the center basket had a severe notchy feeling in it..just a std ball bearing like a throw out bearing.not designed to have latteral force pushing the inner race outwards..changed it out from a old 700 engine that felt much better and the primary noise is not ticking as loud..now after visually checking the oil pump chain, there is a 1/2 in of play on the clutch gear driving the sloppy chain...gets any looser i feel it could jump off ..ordering a new one.woulda thought honda would have had a manual tensioner on it,pretty small chain to be pumping cold thick oil...and ordering a new clutch rod end bearing..had a ride today and noise was reduced alot ..no loud ticking noises..mostly the whine of the gear driven cams..and some slight valve noise didnt set the valves on the tight side...think ive solved the noise issues ..gregg in ohio

Congrats! Sounds like a lot of work, but its well worth it if it fixes the noise!!!
