The bike the new VFR1200 should have been?

I can't speak to the GS, but I can definitely speak to the FJR since my new VFR12 replaced my just totalled FJR. The VFR certainly doesn't come as well prepared to tour as the FJR, but I believe it will prove to be a better platform to build from. It's always bothered me that I can go farther in comfort on most sportbikes than I ever could on my FJR. I've been on FJRforum.com since 2005, and I dare say you'd be hard pressed to find an FJR owner that hasn't tried at least 3 different seats and 3 different windscreens trying to get comfortable on that bike, including me. I could have bought back my cosmetically totalled FJR for peanuts (I rode it back to my shop from the crash site), but opted not to after my wife reminded me how I never really was comfortable on that bike. I always suspected the VFR12 could be a great sport-touring platform, but considered it to be cost-prohibitive. When I found out there were some pretty good deals to be had on leftover models, it was a no-brainer for me. I've wanted a sportier sport-tourer for years, I think with the VFR12 I'm on the right track.

My brother owns an R1200GS. He loves it. He got everything for it you could without getting the Adventure model (He didn't like the spoked wheels). I rode it and was just not that impressed. Very high center of gravity, and to me an awkward weight distribution. I've also ridden an R1200R naked and felt about the same. You must be joking if you think you could keep up with my Ninja 1000 in the twisties, or the straights for that matter. You'll scrape your cylinder heads trying to lean it over that far, that is, if you don't have engine guards on it. The grunt from the Ninja 1000 is way down low and the redline is way higher than the GS. And the Ninja doesn't fall flat in the middle, so good f'n luck...lol. Boxer engines are not the choice for backroads.

Now for cruising all day, I hope you at the very least bought a Sargent saddle for your GS, cause the stock seats on all Beemers SUCK ASS. If you do have an aftermarket seat then yeah, you can cruise all day on the GS, but I could do that on my VFR800 and the Ninja 1000 with the stock seats, even though I opted to go Sargent with them both anyhow. Slightly better, no miracles.

if I had to have a Boxer, I'd get the R1200R and get street bags for it... the touring model caught my eye.

Only when what is being said has been said several hundred times. Anything new you'd care to add before I nod off?

Nah. Do you want a courtesy wake up call when something new and exciting happens? Like when the 2013 model comes out in bold new colors?

All Harley colors are bold. Just ask them.. Look for the gay colors in 2014. There will also be coordinated HD pocket kerchiefs as well. Word has it that puce, fuschia and mauve will be the hot new colors.

You'd all choke if I bought a VFR1200 after all I've said about it... but hey, when they're selling them near me for $10k it makes ya go 'Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...'

...but maybe I should wait another year and get a 'new' 2010 for $8,000.00???... Does puce go with maroon???

    LOL

Nope...have the stock seat and rode from Ohio to Taos New Mexico 2 years ago...no problem at all with the seat. 6500 miles in 12 days.

You'd better guess again if you think you can keep up with most DS type bikes in the really tight stuff....and I'd venture to guess that the GS has more lean angle (and torque) than the ninja..just guessing. Dont believe me? What bikes have the best times on the Tail of the Dragon? Last I knew it was a KLR650!!!! ...but thats been a while.

Your statement "Boxer engines are not the choice for backroads." doesnt make sense! Thats what the GS is designed for! Tell that to the guys that do single trak and backroads all day on GSA's..keeping up with DRZ's and Husky 630s!
Dont get me wrong, I really miss my beloved V4 VFR...She had 80k miles on her when i finally sold out...mostly because I didnt trust anyone to do all the work that was needed on her.
And lets talk comfort...who here thinks a stock VFR 12 is more comfy than a stock GS ? Talk about a plank for a seat!...I think a stock DRZ400 is better than a VFR 12.!

Maybe "boxermotors" ain't for backroads but they sure kicked some ass from Paris to Dakar.

As a wise man once said, " Those who do not know thier history, don't know shit."

If the 1200s get down to 8k, I'm gonna get another one in bold colors and farkle it out..

For those that are not that hip, Ewen and Charlie are the famous Farkle Bros., the only Siamese twins in WSB.

The GS was made for cruising and occasional off-roading. You start speaking about the boxer engine like it's heavenly then don't give good comparisons... best time at the Dragon on a 650? What's that got to do with a GS or boxer? KLR is a different beast. As for the boxer lean angle, check your specs, ask around. They stick out sideways and you'll almost drag a cylinder head as soon as a peg feeler on a boxer. The GS and R1200R do not have a very high ground clearance stock, but they do SIT high.

The Ninja 1000 is way more nimble than the VFR800 and by weight default would spank a VFR1200 as well in the twisties. Center of gravity on the Ninja is almost as good as my old V-strom, and with similar riding positions. I have no doubt I would lose my brother on the backroads in his own neighborhood while he was on his GS and me on my Ninja.

You talk about Dakaar? That's in NO WAY anywhere NEAR a stock GS... LMFAO... yeah, I just wanna buy me a new beemer and take it to the desert and kill it. Those bikes have so many mods on them as to almost match the sticker price of the stocker, SO GET REAL please. Why don't I put long travel suspension on my Ninja and raise it a couple inches and take it to Dakaar?! LMAO.

I'm talking about what the bike was built for for PUBLIC uses... not pro-stock...

That would probably be some minor violation of HD's copyrights. I was thinking maybe of some floorboards with fringes and some 30" bars to subtly enhance the look so more than just the real thinkers would get the satire.
