Some of you may remember my earlier posts about my engine rebuild. Well, everything is reassembled: new rings, new head gaskets, valves lapped, ports cleaned up, carbs cleaned, new exhaust gaskets, etc. etc. etc. I get ready to start her up and and remembered last minute to let the thing run for a bit w/o coolant to let new head gaskets seal up. Glad I didn't put that coolant in! Second time around I put the coolant in, have all leaks sealed up, start her up and I am getting what appears to be white smoke coming from exhaust ports and mufflers. It would appear that the amount of smoke is decreasing each time I start the bike, as I go to start it now, and there is almost no smoke w/choke all the way on and the bike at idle. When I turn down the choke and give it gas, the smoke increases. I have read that this could be due to fuel mixing with the oil, or due to a blown head gasket but I hope against all odds that this smoke is normal for a newly rebuilt engine with new gaskets (head and exhaust) and that it will eventually disappear. I thought I remember reading somewhere that you will see some smoke when new gaskets are installed on exhaust headers. Maybe I am wrong. As a note, the coolant level appeared to be the same before I started the bike compared to after I let it run for a minute or two. Any thoughts???

    Thanks,
    Lucas

Total since that first start, probably 3 or 4 minutes.

Cylinders and new piston rings take awhile to get acquainted, and some oil smoke would be normal initially.

Take it for a short ride, get it up to operating temperature, then stop and let it cool, then check for coolant or oil leaks. Refill coolant again under the rad cap. Then take it on a longer ride, cuz the new rings won't bed-in all proppa-like sittin in your garage.

Read about break-in proceedures and seating new rings on the road.

Of course TOE was mos likely thinkin simular when he was sipping on his Martini while hooking up on Ashley Madison and askin 'bout running time !

Nott to mention what could be coating the inside of the exhaust. Let it all get nice n toasty and then worry if she still smokes

Well, took her out yesterday for a quick ride around the neighborhood. Man it felt good riding! Haven't been on a bike in over 3 years but felt like it was just yesterday! Only downside is I noticed side stand was blocking my shifter so will have to fix that...

A majority of the smoke seems to have stopped. Still getting some smoke from the right muffler. Additionally I am hearing a strange noise that almost sounds like a miss. It is not quite a tick, more of a hiss. Timing issue or valve adjustment?

Also, I am reading that I should not have put synthetic oil in for the break in period. I have Mobil 1 4t for motorcycles in there now. Before I do any more riding I'd like to switch out to petrol oil if recommended. Can someone recommend the proper oil for break in? Can I just use any 30 w ?
