Hello everyone, I am a new member to these forums. I have a question about a very likely purchase I'll be making on a 96 vfr. I have the opportunity to buy this bike for $1000, but there are a couple issues. The woman I am buying off of cannot get the bike to start currently, it's been sitting for a little bit, a few years only being taken out here and there. The battery has been on a trickle charger. Bike has around 10k miles. I'm not overly concerned about her not getting the bike to start, I'm willing to bet its just some gummed carbs and old gas. I understand regulators like to burn out of these frequently too. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow and see if I can get it to run for a bit with some quickstart. My question is that for a 1000 bucks, this sounds like a good deal, but I am hesitant to purchase before I get it up and running. Any thoughts? I know I'll be doing some work, replace all the fluids at the very least.

A pic would help. But if it is a clean bike it sounds like a good deal. Carbs are an easy fix with this gen.

You can easily part it out for more than that assuming the bodywork is in decent shape so I say just buy it regardless. If you get it started even if only momentarily you will have no negotiating leverage so I say offer her $800 as is and see if she'll bite. Worst case scenario you sell a few pieces off it and you end up with a almost complete parts bike for cheap. Does the bike have a title?

If it looks OK, I would say that's a steal.

like it was mentioned above.. if the body panels are in good shape you can at least part it out and get your money back if it doesn't run...

But Crusty, i thought you were a preservationist ?

Let this guy get into putting it back on the road, no matter the torpedoes, full speed ahead! |The sound of the cams and exhaust will draw him in so far, he'll spend what it takes, right ?|

After the carbs are cleaned, truely, propperly 100% cleaned, and with fresh fuel, chances are much better than average the bike will run and run right. Fuck, man, take the chance: it's a Honda after all, one of their best models !

Of course it will run !! It's not an abandoned VF500 from a derelict shed.

Parting out a great bike that could be saved just for a quick profit just might carry some ethical issues if you think about it too much.

In China, prisoners' organs are sold for government profit. Not here, i say, and not with restorable better-quality motorcycles like ours.

I rode my derelict shed 500 today for about an hour, and she felt stronger than ever....

Took a look at the bike today. Has some pretty heavy damage to the plastics from being dropped. The entire left side paneling is shot, so that will need replaced. The right side has some scratches but is intact. The rear brake lever is bent, likely from being dropped. Miles is 11k. Tried starting it up, it ran for a few seconds before it stalled, old amber gas in the tank. What do you all think? Still worth 1k? How much are new plastics for these bikes? I'll try to include pics of the damage, both pics are of the left side. 0325121600.jpg 0325121600a.jpg

I'm trying to find new/used fairings for these bikes and there doesn't seem to be much out there. Any ideas what I can do?

If you bought one in good condition it would be a lot less hassle. Probably a lot cheaper than fixing it too. Others like Tink will be able to weigh in on that better than I.

So I should go for it? I'll probably offer 800 and hopefully catch her at 900.

No, I am just pretty torn on the whole subject of finding fairings. They are hard to come by. Hence why I come here and get the input of those who know better than I. I found a thread on another forum where someone put some CBR600 fairings on and it looked pretty nice.
