I recently bought another '86 vfr, and when I removed the tank I noticed the previous owner had removed the emission control system and blocked some of the vacuum hoses. They put a hose going from the carbs back up to the tank (under the right side of the tank). Does this sound normal to anyone? I assume that this will just overflow gas and vapor back to the tank, right?

A California tank has three ports on the bottom. Left rear and the largest is fuel oot to fuel pump, next to that on the right side is the over flow for the fill cap and is routed to the ground, and an small vent tube up front and to the right that needs to be vented to atmosphere as the California gas caps are not vented. A pic of what it is connected to would be helpful.

Well I'm sure you'll find your answer in a different thread, but whenever I buy a bike I replace all oils and fluids, check the chain and sprocket, bakes, fork seals for leaks, and tires for damage. Then I might take it to either Honda in Glendale or Honda in Hollywood on Santa Monica just to see if a pro spots anything I might miss. Usually when I go on a trip I do the same.

TOECUTTER: do you know if the carbs on the 86 vfr700 are the same as the vfr750?

They both use the Keihin VD carbs with the same spacing, cable pulleys, etc. There may be some jetting difference, but they are totally interchangeable...

As is Kawikid, I am also considering removing all the smog @#&% off of my bike (87 700), but would like to make sure it will run right when done! Where can I get info on what needs to be plugged off versus just removed? Is rejetting required (keeping stock carbs and pipes)? Or, since I'm not hot rodding it, should I just leave it alone?

pull all that shit off. the two steel tubes coming off the front of the block... you have to weld the pipe shut. and you have to plug all the vaccum ports on the carbs ... the bike will run the same with or without the smog shit... BUT you loose about 5or ten pounds of crap......

Your close enough you could ride over and just let me do it. Best to remove the shtuff as the lines on the carbs are prone to leaking at this point in time. If you bring new boots and buy beer it will take aboot an hour.

If by boots, you mean the "carb insulators", I just put new ones on as I had to clean out the carbs... Sounds like a helluvan idea to have someone with a clue to do it. I'm comfortable with doing everything besides the welding. Did non-CA bikes have different heads or what?
