I have a semi-steady leak of motor oil (maybe an ounce or two after a couple weeks of sitting) coming from the side of the crankcase where the clutch lifter rod goes through. I'm assuming I need to replace the oil seal there. Does the crankcase have to be seperated to do this? Better yet, what all is involved? Or, is there something else that would cause the motor oil to leak from there?

    Thanks!

In order to "properly" replace that seal (if it's like the vf500) the cases need to come apart. I had my vf500 torn down to replace the counter shaft bearing last year and ordered that seal since it was open...the parts place shipped me the wrong seal. Lo and behold, it's back together for 2 weeks and the clutch push rod seal starts leaking.

For the vf500 there are a couple of methods on here for doing it without splitting the cases. One involves dremeling the case or the seal...i can't remember. The other involves carefully pushing 1 or 2 o rings over the shaft and into the seal. That's the route that I went and it has held up fine. I used 2 o rings, one that was a step larger than the shaft and one that fit exactly.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you. I will give the O-Ring a try. I assume the smaller o-ring went on first?

I think I actually did it the other way with the larger one going on first.

Some of the Saber /Magna guys have had good luck with the heat shrink tubing fix. Small bit of heat shrink on the spot where the seal is has fixed many a V4.

Very cool. That sounds like a good idea, too. That actually might be even easier to do.
