So I have a 2000 VFR800 and since February I've been fighting this darn fi light gremlin. I've scoured other posts looking for answers and I thought I may have found the answer because the problem went away for a few weeks. Here's the skinny... When I start it up, she purrs and seems as good as ever. However... after about 5 mins of driving the FI light will start to light up, very dimly at first, and get brighter until shining bright. Now here's where it gets strange. If I tap the front brakes it goes away and the process repeats anywhere from 1 to 5 mins later. Hitting the brights also accomplishes the same effect.... The other issue is while at idle, if the turn signal is activated, the FI light will blink along with the signal. I've checked voltage in the battery, checked the ground, checked wire harnesses from ecu, and checked all connections. The problem did, however, seem to start after installing a new ignition cylinder but not til a couple weeks after. Im still thinking that I have a faulty connection or bad ground somewhere but I would greatly appreciate any further input. Thanks!

Would be interesting to pop the bulb socket assembly out of the gauge set. Use a 12v test light to see which side of the board is electrified. See if it is backfeeding voltage through the bulb to the ECU for a ground. Turn signal indicators and high beam share a ground wire which is directly adjacent to the FI signal wire on the gray connector (rear of gauge cluster).

Thank you for the quick reply. I will investigate and reply with results.

Detected no backfeed of voltage through the bulb. Replaced bulb anyways. No change.

Wasn't real likely but neither is your problem. Was simple and worth the check.

The bike will run with the gray and blue plugs disconnected. I would unPlug the connector and check for voltage on the FI light pin of the connector. Can't tell you which it is until tomorrow. This will eliminate the gauge cluster as part of the equation and further narrow it down. Run the bike while checking the pin and see if the test light behaves the same way.

Everything will still run fine even if you connect the gauge set with the blue and gray plug swapped - but don't ask me how I know.

So I haven't tried your suggestion yet but todaY the problem was worse. When I hit the brights the engine sputters for a second. The FI light pretty much stayed on the whole ride. I did notice a small snip in the license plate light green wire. These problems began when I hard that and a new ignition cylinder installed with inspection. New symptoms breed new suggestions. I appreciate the help!

Once had a similar problem with my 98. Was just the clocks back plane (flex circuit) shorting on a worn cable holder (ground). Bumps and brake affected the FI light. Easy to check, push/pull the clocks.

Fixed! After the past 2 days of meticulously re checking everything, I found it! It was a loose wire on the connector to my left headlight. As I was giving up for the day and putting everything back together I decided to check after re connecting each component. By this method and a little luck I started with the left headlight and my issue had presented itself. A little cutting and re crimping with a spray of wd,im all fixed. Thanks everyone for your help.

hrm. Would like to understand how that would make the FI light come on.
