Have you done an accurate carb synch ??

Very unusual but there could be a broken spring at the rear of the basket maybe but with such low miles not likely. Not related to starter clutch or pump chain.

Could it be a valve tick ??

well im gonna check the valves again

maybe it is a ticking valve transmitting the noise down thru the cam gears to the crank in the final drive unit..but still with the poor mans stethiscope the noise is comming fron the center of the primary case,,valve train sounds nice and quiet..i dunno maybe a one way roller and spring in the starter unit to a crap does it at idle or at speed and comes and goes,,there is alot of crap in the one way starter unit gregg

May be worth you time to pull it apart and inspect the gears, basket, and starter clutch. That would drive me nuts wondering what it was. Any way to post a clip of the noise?
