If its what I think your talking about, then the white powder is Aluminum Oxide. Aluminum reacts in a similar way to iron which forms Ferrous Oxide (we call it rust) with salts, water & air. Aluminum can also pit. If the piece of aluminum is painted, it can still oxidize & the powder that forms makes the paint bubble. Some people will tell you to use something like bicarb on it, don't, it will only make it worse. The only real way to get rid of it, is to either polish it out, but this will be continuous as it will oxide again & you will have to keep doing it. If you just leave it, the oxide actually protects the aluminum underneath, but looks crap. The only real cure is to strip the paint off, polish the aluminum & respray. Some people reckon that a product called Navel Jelly (contains an acid) used to treat rust can work, but I've never tried it.

What year is your bike.? By looking at the picture look like your bike have been out side in the snow for quite some time. Are you sure the bike is only 1.5 years old? Look like it is a 5th or 6 gen. What I would do is strip the front end off and give her a good scrup and might have to repaint the folk

November 6th 2010 I wheeled it out the show room. I live on the south coast of england, I do expect it to get a lil bit because of the salt air but not this bad.

Wow.......that is not good for the bike that new. Did you left her outside in the winter? Give her a serious bath and take her inside.

I believe the above poster was correct in saying aluminum oxide and his suggestions reiterate about what I've heard... I have used mothers aluminum polish but never with the success that others say they get out of it. I think it has something to do with how much time you are willing to put into cleaning. I'm sure if you clean and polish pretty frequently(1x a week or so I would guess), you can keep that to a minimum.

Mind you this is purely conjecture. As most of the R3 crowd can attest to, I clean my bike about 1x per year if I'm feeling frisky.
