I have a 98 VFR800, which I've had for 5 years. It was an accidental purchase, as I was looking for a Bandit at the time. Can't say I have any regrets though! I love the V4 and she is in great condition, with hardly a mark on her. Mods are Ballistic slip on, Zero Gravity screen , Pair removed, flapper valve and snorkel removed from air box. Future plans are new headers, turn signal mirrors and removal of the stock indicators, rear LED light cluster and fairing custom respray. C ya

The vacum operated solenoid on top of the air box that controls the variable air intake, just called it that cos its got a flap in it , yep. As far as pics go I'll get some on the iPad and share, none on here at the mo.

What's the benefit of deleting that (and the PAIR system)?
Sorry I am a little green when it comes to stuff like this.

The benefit of removing the two is more intake noise and weight loss. No performance gain.

    No "smoothing" effect?
IDC about performance per se.. the VFR has more than enough power for me.
Smoother power delivery would be nice though (a dyno tune is in the future).

depends on the year. the '98 and '99 are an open loop FI system with no O2 sensors. So removing PAIR cannot have any affect on performance. Likewise for the earlier carbed models. I have run the 1990 on the dyno with PAIR operating and blocked with no change. You actually HAVE to block it to get proper fuel air ratio readings at idle.

The way the system is designed, it shouldn't affect the closed loop systems of 2000 and later that have O2 sensors. But many people swear it changed things for the better.

As far as the flapper valve goes; undoubtedly Honda engineers just cooked that one up as a creative way to pull the wool over the eyes of the consumer and add more cost into the bikes so their managers profit margins would be less.
