Speed limiter on my '99 VFR800i

    You cannot get rid of this safety feature, its there for a reason to prevent the engine from self destructing. Transmission can only handle so much torque. Engine can only go so fast. You go too high too fast, youll blow your motor.

    if that were the case it would be on every bike. my bike has never "blown up". i have a us spec bike and does not have this "feature."

    and the engine going to fast is handled by the rev limiter. 10k in first and 10k in sixth.... the engine doesnt care.

    torque is a similar situation. does a dyno chart read more torque in sixth gear than in first?

    I don't need to keep track of the speed I'm doing nor do I care, I just want the speed limiter off. It is not a "feature" to prevent the bike blowing up - that's a rev limiter and mine works where it's supposed to. I have a speed limiter which stops me exceeding 200km/h. My bike is what we call a Jap Import. It has clocks marked only to 180km/h. I know there is a cure because there was a guy in town that did the mod but I can't find him. Also my bike is not down on power as it pulls as hard as my mates' VFR750.

    I'm pleased to report after fitting another model ECU/CDI that my speed limiter issue is an issue no more
    E bay to the rescue, I thought the forum would be of more help but it just full of speculation rather than answers

    What do you think - you post a problem on a forum and the first answer must be right and correct? Usually not. A forum is for discussing various scenarios, ideas, challenges, whatever.

    Perhaps the forum was useful by giving you ideas that DIDN'T fix your problem?

    Glad to see you got it fixed, and be safe at those 140mph passes.

    I'm just surprised that no one had an answer for me, never mind the 1st answer. Not one person had a an answer. I must say I was kind of expecting something more like this:
    "Hi SimonRC36RC46, I had the same problem on my import. At the grey plug on the CDI you must cut the pink wire and then splice the brown and orange wire together and your limiter will be no more"
    I'm not the type of rider who needs to ask about tyre sizes or whether to drop the forks through or how much tyre pressure to use or how to check the oil.
    I was expecting a little more technical knowledge in VFR world but forums are generally frequented by middle aged bored execs who take offence when I point out that I can't a straight answer to a problem.
    They probably own more golf clubs than tools and they post advice based on what they have heard or read on rides or the forums. I'm a straight talking biker who just wanted a straight answer and not a friendly chat. Thanks and goodbye

    i dont understand why you feel the need to be so rude to a group of people who tried to help you. not many of us have the problem you do so we can offer no advice for a fix... see how that works?

    a better approach for you would have been to say

    " hey guys i have found a solution to our problems. i have tried this and it definitley works"

    that is then added to the knowledge datadase and can be accessed from here on out. hell you could even go around looking cool and providing a solution for others who have the same question. not everyone knows everything about these bikes and we need everyones bit and pieces (ideas and suggestions) to find an answer sometimes.

    I guess because no one on this effing forum know's sh1t about VFR's
    that's why so many lame questions and just speculative answers
    so many maybe's and could be's and then you expect the guys that know stuff to just share all the info
    It took me from May 2011 to March 2012 to save up for and locate a CDI unit
    Hard in Africa but you arrogant American's who think you invented the world wouldn't know that in your nanny state

    i think in your african arrogance you have neglected to see that noone here has a bike with these issues so how in the world could we offer a fix? you have such an obscure problem that most here have never or will ever encounter....

    there are a lot of knowledgeable people here talking vfrs. it sounds like you dont understand how a forum works. go to yahoo answers if you want to type in a question and receive an answer you can refuse or grade. when you come to a forum you get a discussion in which questions are asked and some speculation is thrown around.... THATS HOW A FORUM WORKS!!!

    i find it humorous that you repeatedly speak of others arrogance but seem to be blind to your own

    HI Simon, Great to hear you have a confirmed solution, I would be interested to any details of the ecu you purchased as to what numbers on it what year it was from etc , How much it cost etc. I can buy a few here in NZ but I worry they are possibly jap import ones also. To clear up all the questins as to why we need to be able to exceed 200Kmph is simple If a bike is designed to go 280kmph and is "speed" limited in japan so people dont kill themselves and then sold - exported from japan the buyers of these bikes eg us want to be able to get full potential from our bikes as and when we want to. For me I dont ride the NZ roads at these speeds but want to do a track day here or there and dont want to hit a speed wall at 180 - 200kmph on the back straight. I can understand the frustration trying resolve a problem for several hunderd or more bikes exported from japan you would think finding the info on the web maybe a little easier than it is but hey if I can get the confirmed parts etc and put it on a few forums maybe the next guy will know the fix. Keep posted for more... PS fitted a Micron pipe to my bike and have to say they do sound better than a V8 supercar - cam driven valve whine + the roar is very addictive :)

    Simon cracks me up! I love the blunt, straight to the point, no BS. Folks need to lighten up. Not sure how many times or how many ways the guy can say "the bike cuts out on speed and not RPM." Can't blame him for a little frustration.

    Well at least on this forum people chime in. On the Ducati forum I'm on from time to time, I posted a simple question...

    "Looking to get some speed bleeders for my 1995 900SS/SP. I would like to get them for all three calipers and the clutch slave. These are stock Brembo calipers but the clutch slave is a Evoluzione. Does anyone know what size I would need to get? MC Superstore has the Goodridge speed bleeders $14.99/pair I'm buying some other items and I'm trying to fill in the order to get free shipping.
    They have three sizes available...7mmx1.0, 8mmx1.25, 10mmx1.0"


    Out of 156 views of my post, only one person responded and his was to suggest buying an in-line speed bleeder "...works equally well and it's less mess to install.". I would anticipate a comment or two, such as "look it up" or "take one out and measure it". On VFR World you'll get at least a half dozen responses, some useful, some not, some just plain snarky, but at least there's more than one response. So as far as this forum goes, I prefer it to the Ducati one, hands down! Any one know the answer to my bleeder question? or do I have to take one out and measure it?:wink:

    He is to the point, Tink. And yes, some people missed what he was saying about speed versus rev limiter. But being to the point and being a pompous dickhead saying he would have expected better? I think he just had a case of small penis syndrome because his bike couldn't go fast, and his feelings were hurt.

    Having rode through nowhere lands of Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, I'll give him a pass on some small penis syndrome. I would be bald from pulling my hair out in frustration to have wide open badlands and hitting a speed limiter. Then to explain the symptoms numerous times and not have anyone listen would further force me to jab a spork in my eye socket.

    Would be epic adventure to ride across Africa and I cannot help but be filled with envy.

    Hi ,came across this post about the 5th Gen VFR800 and speed restriction, I just would like to note for future readers and new seekers of this info .

    Some of the '95-'02 Honda bikes which have speed restriction have one of 2 ways they are operated ,one is via a Reed switch on bikes with mechanical Speedos ,here the trigger disk can be removed, on bikes like the VFR800 and VTR1000 with digital Speedos ,they have an extra module mounted in the clocks that depending on the market of the bike can be set to limit at that markets speed limit, to disable this module ,remove the clocks from the bike, on the rear side of the clocks where the contact bolt to the parts, find the line that is Yellow/Red ,this is the wire that goes to the ecm to notify when the set speed limit has been reached, now on some bikes like CBR600F and VTR1000F the Yellow/Red wire can be disconnected from it's module contact and then bridge it to the Black/Brown ,but on bikes like VFR800 and CBR1100XX the clocks backing Matt tray make it a bit harder, so what you do is make a jumper lead which is an insolated wire with lug for screw fitting, again the Yellow/Red and Black/Brown line to be bridged but now the speed module may cause interference, so to stop it, remove the screw that mounts the Green/Black (earth/negative) supply to that module so as to disable it's operation

    For bikes that are not using original clocks, at the ecm you could cut the Yellow/Red wire and bridge it to Black/red or Black/brown this will do the same job by keeping that circuit loaded high so telling the even that the bike has not yet reached it's speed limit point
