I swapped a motor on my gen 2 and I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with the DMV red tape on this. Ive got a clean titled non op on the bike, and a bill of sale for the motor. I only have a bill of sale on the motor, and I know its from out of state.

From what I read on their website, you are supposed to file a report within 10 days, supply a bill of sale, and maybe go through some kind of verification? Does anybody have any experience with this??? Any tips for getting through the process would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

YES!!! Don't do it. (report it, that is...) As long as the bike has a clean title, put whatever power plant you want in it. That's your business, not their's.

I hear what you are saying, but I don't think that is going to fly with my buyer. The engine code is on the title. I'm thinking I'm just going to have to dive into the red tape and be prepared for some kind of lame fee.

Oh, my bad. You're selling it. That's a whole 'nother can of worms. (hey, why don't we have a "can 'o worms" smilie?

Hmmm.... But I don't know that the engine # is required on the title when you transfer it. Also don't know that they'll check unless it's an out-of-state title coming into CA. They didn't even see the bike when I bought my VFkR, nor the VFR. The VFkR didn't have an engine # on the title I got either. So what I'm thinking is perhaps you can prepare the transfer paperwork without the engine #. As long as it's an 'intra-state' transfer I don't see any sort of issue.

I have done this several times and it is a bit of a pain. You will have to go in for visual inspection at DMV for VIN inspection to get it changed on the title. I have always done this at smaller DMV offices as they tend to be more helpful and less by the book. Good luck, hope you don't need it.

I didn't bother when I swapped my engine, but I never intend to sell. If I do, I guess I'll give them both motors and let them handle it how they will.

That sucks that CA tracks the engine VIN, here they just record the frame VIN and that's it.
They could give two hoots less about the engine VIN because they know motorcycle maniacs blow them all the time.
    Ugh.

Dookie, they track them in Cali because of the high rate of Motorcycle theft.
