Trying to get all the bits together for the 85 VF1000RF rebuild. Whole bunch of NOS bits arrived (top and bottom fairings, mufflers, indicators, taillight etc) and getting the mechanicals sorted out. The poor old girl is still hanging from the shed roof due to lack of time and near lethal opposition from the dear wife.
Got my Avon Azaros ST tyres fitted to my VF1000RF wheels (front rim is NOS). These were the only radials I could get for the rim sizes. They look pretty chunky tyres, I hope they perform as well as they look. The one against the wall is a near new BT45 which I put on the bike when I first got it.

Also came up with a foolproof method of carby refurbishment.

    The other R - 84 VF1000RE is undergoing an increasingly complex and expensive programme to make it rideable;
new front and rear brakes (master cyl's, disks, rebuilt calipers)
    cooling system rebuild
putting on original collector box and original mufflers
    cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning

    1. Cool name, a few will recognize it.

    2. VF1000R?, one time you said F, one time E. I think the 84 was an E.

    3. Pics required.

    Welcome.

Yowzas, that NOS stuff had to cost you 3 arms and 2.5 legs.

VF1000RF 1985 Euro spec - with oil cooler. The "anus" exhaust is to be replaced by NOS mufflers and near perfect collector box.

VF1000RE Aussie spec - with no brakes (if you look closely you will see my scooter hiding behind it). The Ducati mufflers went in the trash and will be replaced by some very nice originals.

    :potstir:

I'm almost a noob and want to, know what are the performance advantages of cleaning vs. polishing ?? And what sort of protective coat do you use against corrosion ??> |Which items need cleaning, and which polishing. Noob, sorry !

In practical terms, in AUS, is it possible to find places where the top speed potential of your fast bike can be put to proper useage ? 'round 'ere we have interstate/autobahn roads long and straight, often not well-patrolled, you settle into a nice, easy, 130 mph cruise in full tuck, usually at night and the only thing to fret about is some cager or trucker calling you in to the State Gestapo. I 'spoze the roads 'cross the outback are no place for speed, but whach'a 'ave?

Good job on this one, so what's your next project, and what otha bikes 'aVE you done to this fine standard ?

Which, if you might be so bold as to offer an opinion, is the premier Australian city for good riding if you live in a city, and why did Anthony Gobert spoil his splendid career so wrechedly ??

I am not sure about the first part of your post squirrel, but as far as speed goes I have no idea. We have lots of speed cameras, patrol cars, patrol bikes, and airwing to monitor speeding. 40km and over is a hoon driving offence and vehicle is impounded for 28 days, any damage done to bike during towing or impound is tough luck. Licence also is suspended for 3-6 months. Best place is on the track on a track day.

These photos are both of the bikes before any work was begun. The scooter is the only really top condition bike I have at the moment, 4800km, came out of box in March 2009. Sometimes when I'm riding it (smooth, comfortable, no repairs/mainenance required) I wonder what the F I am doing fixing 25-30 year old bikes. Then I go down the shed and see the challenges waiting for me and realise I enjoy tinkering with the old bikes.

Dukie - arms, legs, and testicles if the wife ever found out how much the stuff cost.

Not much progress except finding a few more bits and pieces.
As mentioned in another thread I have bought a set of VF1000F2 (86) crankcases which seem identical to the 85 1000R cases except for a couple of bolt holes which are not drilled out.
Has anyone fitted a set of F2 cases into an 85/85 1000R or vice versa?

Weren't the F2s also chain driven cams? Not sure but I'd guess the cases would be different from the R?

That Euro spec bike is before any work was begun? It's gorgeous. Are you replacing the 4-1 collector with the original 4-2? Selling the 4-1 by chance??

And where did you find NOS fairings? I thought they went extinct long ago!

    Hi vfrcapn,

Yes the euro bike is before work, it looks good, the body work is nice (but the blue is far too dark and not metallic) but the rest (engine is ok internally) was shite. More problems than I can type. Probably when I get a set of body work done in the correct colours I will flea bay the complete set that was on the bike when I bought it.

F2's were chain drive but the only diff I can see is that the bolt hole for the bottom retaining bolt on the gear drive cassettes is not drilled out. If I wann't so lazy I would grab my spare 1000R cases (86 US model) and see If I can find the model code of the castings on them.

Both bikes are getting original exhaust systems, sadly I could only get one NOS set of mufflers but have a near new set from a US ebay seller.

The 4:1 will be sold when I get round to it (ie dig it out).

NOS fairings came from europe, and are the correct colour (mainly blue) so it was a great score. Over here panel and paint is very expensive, I was quotet around $4500 to paint the tank, tail cowl, seat cover, front fender, and top and bottom fairings.

You said you put radials on the rims. What brand name are the tire? Hard to find radials for those narrow rims.

Tyres are Avon Azarro ST's. get very good write ups. They were the only matched front/rear radials I could get in the sizes.
I am not a road racer so I think they will do me fine.
