    Hello,

I am just now getting used to riding my 1998 VFR800 and took it out for the first tim at night.

I apologize if this has been mentioned before but does this LCD (not LED) panel light up at night? I can't seem to find any reference to this from any of the manuals or search of the site.

I would definitely think it is supposed to light up.

Start with the easy - check your fuses.

Maybe its just a bulb burned out (I actually have one in my panel that's out. I can still see everything at night, but there's a definite dark spot.)

The whole instrument panel should be illuminated.

Based on looking at the parts fiche on bikebandit. There are a couple small bulbs that twist lock into the back of the gauge cluster. You should be able to pick these up at your local auto parts store.

I was looking at the service manual and saw the same thing. I hope it is just the bulbs because everything else works fine as far as the temp/ trip and clock so I don't think it is a fuse. But I won't be able to check it out until the weekend. I commute to work every day and when I get home, it's too dsrk outside to take the front cowl off and snoop around. Thanks for all your help. I will update you all when I can get to the bike. I will probably check the fuses tomorrow since they are easier to get to under the seat. I can do that at lunch.

Sounds good, when I got my first bike, a 75 KZ400 both gauge backlight bulbs, oil pressure indicator bulb, and brake light warning indicator bulb where all burned out when I got it. Vibration from the engine and bumps in the road aren't nice to incandescent light bulbs...

Yep, I had to replace the bulbs in my instrument panel on my '98 last year. One was already burnt out and when the other one went I just replaced them all while I was in there.

If I had it to do again I would have used red LEDs. LEDs last longer, use less power and you can get them in different colors.

    EDIT:
The indicator bulbs (turn signal, high beam, etc) are a different size than the back panel lights. Just a heads up if you want/need to replace those.

Good to know. I might just look for red LEDs just to match the bike colors.

If you decide to get the standard bulbs any auto parts store will have them. Just take one with you.

OK Guys, I did some work on my bike today and found and replaced all the bulbs except for the 4 little indicator lights like oil, neutral, FI and such and I did not replace the turn signal indicators. But Hallelueiah, I have lights on my LCD screen.

I also took the time to flush my coolant and change my oil and filter.

    Oh BTW. Vendor Alert: :potstir:

Autozone is selling their Castrol and Valvoline 4 stroke MC oil for $2.99/quart if you buy online and pickup at the store. The $2.00/quart online coupon is added when you order the oil. I bought 20 quarts.
