white 1987 mirror stems cracked any fixes?

1987 vfr700f2 the mirror stems are cracked all of em do it...any suitable material to fill it and sand it and repaint? body shop guy had some black urethane that he uses on bumpers that would fill the crack and takes paint...misses a new set on ebay but they were hadibg for a hundred bucks apiece new in wrapper and not cracked..had to hold off on getting auctionitis on that one ..but it would have fixed the problem and they will eventually crack anyway..so i stopped at 82 bucks a pop..gregg in ohio

 

my guess is the mirror stems collect water, when the water freezes in the winter they crack.

my stems on my 87 never cracked until I stored it in a unheated garage.

 

Just about every '86/'87 VFR i've ever seen had those cracks !!!!~

Cosmetic, not structural, so mirrors are not in danger of falling off.

 

Does anyone know what brand / year of mirror are easy to use as replacements for the 2nd gen bikes? Mine are cracked as well, but more importantly, I'd prefer that my mirrors stick out another 1/2 - 3/4" beyond stock placement. It seems like the style for attachment on these is not common for all years.

 

the plastic over time shrinks and expands from age..sunlite doesnt help..called freedom hills honda in cinncinnati have lots of old nos stock parts and they found me one at a dealer in iowa on the computer locator for parts.,,brand new in the wrapper for 69 bucks plus shipping,,that was a right hand ,,now i need a left hand mirror,,anyone have a new left hand white complete mirror..thanks gregg in ohio

 

well i went to a body shop and they had some stuff caled permatex bondo plastic bumper repair kit .2 part flexible epoxy.auto parts stores have it .its a flexible and sets in 4 min sands in 30 min flexible but sandable and doesnt clog the sandpaper..had a raised crack took a rasp file and filed it flush ,filled the crack as deep as i could filled it three times with plenty to sand off ..it will actually cut off any accsess with a sharp exacto knife..sanded with 180 the 400 then scotch bright green pad .little white primer the filler stuff is black ..now getting ready to shoot the stems with krylon appliance white same as the wheels ..they should look pretty good unless the crack starts to open up but the filler is flexible so i think it will work,,ill paint them tommorrow..this will make the mirroers look lots better ..till i can find a left hand nos mirror i found a r hand one nos ..these will make the 87 f2 look great..funny thing is all the mirror stems crack in the same places..gregg
