As I mentioned, I just bought a 1985 VF750F today so I thought it would be a good idea to join a forum to ask questions and get information. I trolled the forum a bit while I was trying to decide between two bikes I was gonna buy (the other was a Kawasaki GPz750...). When I took my first ride, I really knew I made a good decision. I have been riding for a couple years now and this is my first "man's bike" (bigger than 400cc). My bike, the VF750, is in good condition mechanically because the previous owner was a good mechanic but alas, cosmetically it is in terrible shape (fairings were in bad shape, paint is chipped in lots of places). Bike is in a solid riding condition as is, even had the safety cert with it. I must announce this bike will likely get the streetfighter treatment from me, I know that's a bit of a sore spot for some people on this forum and for that I apologize; I'm still a young hooligan with no appreciation for the past, I'm sure I'll learn one day, but not now. ;) Please don't worry too much, it will be done tastefully, I assure you. This will also be my first attempt at a streetfighter. I'm a "decent" mechanic for my own means (I did most of my own work on the previous bikes; bleeding brakes, changing fork oil, new chains, oil changes...fairly basic stuff) but I haven't done much electrical and engine stuff yet (I would be proud if I could take my carbs apart and put them back together) so I will be teaching myself as I go along with this build. I am keenly aware of my limits as a gearhead but I also hoping to expand them with this bike. I'm looking forward to this project and having fun on this forum and the bike! Nice to meet you all!

Congrats with your new purchase and welcome aboard.

Some are opposed to making the old VF a fighter, but its your bike. Do what you want. But until you post of a picture of it now, and then keep us up to date with pictures, we'll have to assume your a liar and don't really own this bike.

Welcome to the group, glad you're enjoying Interceptor ownership! Great group here, if you have any questions just ask. Hey, as far as the streetfighter approach, sure you'll get some flak about it...but after all, it's YOUR bike. Oh, one thing we do insist on - PICS - as quickly as possible! (But since you've been trolling here, you already knew that, didn't you?)

Streetfighter, cafe racer or restored to pristine stock these bikes are great to ride, and like Pliskin said, it's your bike to do what you want with..... within reason, of course. If you go too far pliskin sends that big nasty green snake after yer azz.

Welcome to the Jungle. Do what you want with your bike.
Just try to stay away from the duct tape and bailing wire( have to draw the line somewhere)
Just treat her well, it's a classic. And enjoy the ride.

Thanks everyone! Yes, I know about pics, it was already too dark to take any when I jumped online. I don't have a garage, just a car port, so I am restricted by weather and outdoor lighting until it warms up. I will be taking pics today and starting my own thread in the "1st gen" section for the build.

Welcome aboard! If you plan on storing your bike under a car port, you may want to get a good quality cover for it. There are a few bikes in the complex where I live that are under car ports but not "covered" and they're starting to show a little premature aging.

Personally I think the earlier model VFRs would be a little cleaner looking as a street fighter than the later model years, there was much less stuff on them. Good luck on your project!

    Cheers.

With so many bikes similar to yours out of action due to some notorious engine problems, you could probably find good replacements for the damaged bodywork fairly easily.

Another good source of info is www.sabmag.org (I'm a list member over there too). It's mainly comprised of Sabre and Magna owners, but it also has a very healthy accounting of early Intercepters. A wealth of info about those early V-4's can be had there.
