+1 I have this exact same symptom on my Gen 5.

Anyone had any experience with this symptom?

    Ok. There are more symptoms..

When I got home today I could not get the neutral light to come on.

I could put the bike into neutral and move it but no light.

During this time I could not start the bike. Not with clutch in, stand up anything... There was a ticking sound (like a relay) near the gear selector.

When riding I notice the neutral starts to flicker before it fails completely.

After 15-30 mins neutral is working perfectly...

    Any ideas..?

FYI - I spoke to Honda..

they have suggested the neutral light has an earth wire and the wire used is very thin. It is prone to degradation and they believe this is the cause of my issues.

I am having them fix this (as I want this sorted - I don't want to be stranded on a long trip)

Hope this helps anyone else with these symptoms...

    Was your problem fixed?

I have the same symptom. 5th gen/90000 kms. When engine hot (104 C) it starts to flicker. When I bend the bike to the right while in neutral, off the neutral light. Flick to the right, back on the neutral light. Switch is in the transmission I guess, hot oil affect it?

Honda replaced the neutral switch. I can't remember the price was 1.5-2 hrs labour plus part..

I hope this helps you out.

Mine was fine then just started misbehaving. Would only fail when hot so it does seem like a similar fault.

I don't have the knowledge to answer your other questions..

Thanks, I just concluded this is the part I have to change and you confirm it. It's just above the oil level so it's easy to replace.

Can someone tell me where this switch is located? I can't seem to put an eye on it.

The neutral safety circuit is a pull to ground requirement. So any of 3 switches can be the issue and including ground (frame) connections.

Im not sure of failure rates but there is a simple easy way to test if a switch is the problem. Simply shorting a switch to ground will make it look closed to the ecu. You can also use an ohm meter to test continuity of a disconnected switch. Some do fail in the closed position.

    Hello,
I had the same problem. the reason for this was very simple too thick cooper washer :) on the switch on the gear box. I did replace it with 0.5 mm less thicker and I am back in business
    P.S.
I know the tread is very old, just my 50 cents

Just 'cause it's an old thread doesn't mean it isn't still relevant. Shit happens.

I replaced the neutral switch on my '00 with an OEM unit and I still don't have a neutral light on the dash. The switch functions properly (continuity tested) so I'm going to trace out the wire next. When it isn't so cold that I risk damaging the plastics by taking them off...

If the neutral light is not working then I would start by checking the bulb, and the diode needs to be functional as well.
