Rear Shock Replacement in 1998 VFR Question

    Was going to replace my shock with a 929CBR shock. Does the exhaust system need to be removed to drop the shock out after the lower shock mount triangle is removed?

    No the exhaust is fine, but you do need to machine the clevis and machine up a extension. Or contact jamie Daugherty I have his shocks on both of my bikes get work for a great price!

    OK, the exhaust stays. But, I read and viewed the photos on a site where the shock was a replacement by just extending the top bracket to drop the shop down about 42cm. Looked like a pretty simple job to fabricate as there were 3 different examples.

    I guess if you have the skills to do it your self go for it! Nothing wrong with that it will save you money and the knowledge you'll pick up in the process can be passed on to others.

    Removing the exhaust is not neccessary but helps. If you gonna D.I.Y. make sure you secure the bike like this

    so it won't move forward and drop. You should also be able to secure the rear wheel in the upper possition.

    Once you are at it, it is wise to perform some cleaning and lubricarion down there. I personaly use grease for outboard engines, lasts much better in wet conditions.

    I got one of Jamie Daugherty's shocks. I did not remove the pipe or the wheel & with a bit of patience she went straight in. Didn't truly know just how crap the old shock was until swapped...huge improvement.
