So quick run down.. I have a 5th Gen that belonged to a good friend who passed. Need less to to say.. it has great sentimental value. So I took it upon myself to fixxer up and get it on the road again. Mind you I've never been a bike Guy.. I'm willing to learn.the bikes been sitting for a solid 5 yeas or so. I've already gone though and done plugs, oil, tank removal and cleaning along with some fresh 100 octane :) I've also replaced the clutch which was pretty bad but luckily the plates were not distorted in any way.. although the one closest to To the motor had some pretty visible Burns. The bike was also dropped a few time so scuffs are a common thing at the moment. Also rear set is bent. I look forward to using this site alot in the near future I have some pictures and will be posting with any progress made.

Welcome. The 5th gen. seems to be a favorite date for the prom. You will be VERY happy with the bike and it sounds like it will have even more personal value because of where it came from. Put up some pics. when you can and ask any questions when you need. Great folks round here hell bent on helping out!!

Welcome to the World! There's plenty of info and advice here, plus plain old opinions so you should find what you need here to get her going again.

With that, when you say that you have never been a bike guy, does that mean you never got your Motorcycle License? or just have not been that into bikes? If this is your first bike I would suggest picking up a few books on riding and get your learners permit ASAP. If you need a riding partner you can post an invitation or even PM anybody on the forum and I'm sure you'll get takers.

As for what books, here are a few that seem to be really popular... 'Total Control' by Lee Parks, 'Proficient Motorcycling' by David Hough, 'More Proficient Motorcycling' by David Hough, 'Twist of the wrist' by Keith Code and 'Twist of the wrist II' by Keith Code.

    Good Luck!

Yes new to this al the way around.. and I thank you Ford the book info. I will be sure to read a lot more.. I'm in the process of getting my m1 currently. I've ridden smaller dirt bikes (Honda cfr75) but no street bikes. I have ridden this one a few times and plan on much more Learning of the bike and feeling comfortable while on it. I'm also new to working on them as well.. although mechanically capable.. somthing different. I'm also lucky to have a few close people to help me out on the way as well with the riding and mechanical issues as well. But I will definitly be reading a ton of stuff over the next few months.

Never a bike guy. No such thing. You just didn't know before. I am 56 and had never ridden a bike up until 2006 when I bought this pone for econonmic reasons. Now I have some 90,000 miles under my belt in 5 short years on this thing. You will learn.

Welcome. Lots of knowledge here. But none of it tends to come from me.

Thanks. I wasn't struck on it when I bought it but the white did grow on me quick. The alternatives, new, at the shop were limited at the time. But alas, the plastics were all taken off Saturday and in the paint shop. Changes are afoot.

welcome to the site. You are not too awful far from lot's of other members, and several of us will be getting together around labor day (or whichever one is in May) for a little BBQ at my place. just search for R3-2012 or roadhouse roundup or something like that and you should find the thread. It's a good time, and you get to meet people eye to eye rather than keyboard to keyboard. Also, I have lot's of spare parts that'll be hitting the market for a 5th gen soon. I just want to fix up one decent set of plastics, then I'll have several rashed up pieces that can be used to patch or whatever. I also have a spare tank but I don't think you mentioned anything wrong with your tank...
