Right i have a 99 bike that im using for commuting on. So far the bike hasn't been to good at commuting because it/ i get set on fire and it's to over geared, as in it doesn't want to travel at 10kph . i'm seriously thinking of gearing it down but am worried it will become a crazed wheely machine.

    Back to my point

There is alot of posts about how this bike over heats when in traffic and i must admit it does get very hot but it would seem 104c ish is pretty normal for this bike in the traffic. What is a bigger problem than this is how hot I get sitting on the bike particularly my right leg. The problem seem pretty clear the exhaust goes right around my leg so my leg gets far to hot.

SOoooo. i was thinking of wrapping the exhaust in thermal wrap to keep my leg from catching on fire and if i also put it on the front 2 headers it should reduce the coolant temp because there will be less exhaust heat heating up the bike.

Has anyone tired this successfully ?

Even though it's actually raining i tested the temp of the exhaust going past my foot. it's 202c ! 400F. im sure it'll get quite a bit hotter than that on a hot summers day too !

The hot foot issue was helped oot considerably by installing the catless headers. Do not know what the actual temp change was but my foot is no longer tortured.

In regards to your gearing issue, I went -1 on the front sprocket and I like the results. It is NOT a wheelie machine. I think you need a supercharger for that. Just watch out for the pulleys, they will bite you!

The other thing is that the throttle on the 5th gen is a bit snatchy at low speeds.

I did the VTR fan mod and it helped the temps by as much as 10 degrees.

    thanks guys

what does this mean "Just watch out for the pulleys, they will bite you"

Well i've ordered some exhaust wrap. however looking back it's probably going to be a bit big and fat. I guess it doesn't matter it's cheap and i can have a few goes. Once correctly installed im sure it will do wonders. i've done it to cars in the past and it made a huge difference to temps.

i've also geared down all my previous bikes. but this is the first bike that will get the front wheel in the air in first by simply cranking the throttle open anywhere in the rev range with the stock gearing.

Sorry man, I was attempting to be funny. You can safely ignore the Supercharger comment.

    Ultra,

You should post some pics and the results of the exhaust wrap. I've never used it, but am considering it because it is cheap and seems hard to mess up.

ok will do. I just tested it again 225c today im sure on a hot day it will be over 250c

it's certainly cheap so it doesn't matter if you stuff it up the first time and im certain it will pretty much resolve the issue

Careful with the pipe wrap. It can hold moisture and rot out your pipes, but you don't realize it because you can't see the little buggers anymore. Still, it looks like your solution is a really good one. Just wrapping that little section of pipe sure works well to reduce temps.
