Can anyone tell me if the heat shield that goes over the rear exhaust headers is necessary? Like an idiot I installed my motor before putting these on! I can get the headers on just fine but I don't think I will be able to get the heat shield on without pulling the engine head off. I really hate to go through that again but if it has to be done it has to be done. This is on an '85 vf700f btw.

    Thanks

After market header systems for your bike do not have the shielding so I would say you can get away with it but I would install it myself for the added protection. It is a part if the bike that get way too hot and your shock is just inches away as well as other parts that do not like to be BBQ'd.

The heat shield really is important .

If the issue is you cannot fit the sheet metal in there then cut the shield in half down the center and install in two pieces. It works.

If that will not work go to a ceramic supply store and buy some Insowool.
the Insowool can be 1200ºF on one side and 300ºF on the other side.

They sell it in rigid sheet and a thick blanket like texture.
Just secure it with stainless wire.

Never thought to cut the thing in half! Will try this and keep the Insowool in mind as a backup. Thanks!

JEGS performance car catalogue now has heat barrier material that is .007 thick (like a sheet of paper that protects up to over 1000ºF. Used for the floor on race cars.
