too many problems...

alright, so i bought my bike and it ran,i bring it home and dont start it up for a few days, at first it needed a new gas tank and carb rebuild, now its leaking gas...
can anyone tell me how to get this bike started again..
its a 85 vf500f

 

I'm not sure I want to know, but if I could ask, what is printed on the VF500F T-shirt? ;-)

+1 on Tink's post above, too vague a post to help in diagnosing.

VF500Fs take a skilled mechanic and a decent spare parts bin.

They're not for everyone but if you put the effort in they are well worth the price of admission.

i wanna keep it still, i got 3 months to learn, cause i wanna ride in spring and its my first bike.

doing the right thing and having a shop fix the gas tank and do the carb rebuild for me.
my main concern is just to get it running. rather pay someone to do it right the first time, then do it myself and mess up ahah

and it has 7134 miles on the clock.

 

This engine is a spring chicken with only 7k on the clock. It should be a keeper.

Retaining a professional with First Gen V4 experience is A-okay but really, as with any vintage bike, it's best to work on the bike yourself. This said if you don't have the space, time, tools, mechanical knowledge, etc., respectfully, this may not be the best bike for you.

Sad to see such a low mileage 500 in this condition (if the mileage, as noted, is indeed accurate). Serious neglect here.

This is very much a tear down and rebuild, IMO.

Agreed, inspecting the valve train is step one.

Ok, it is just one bike. Learning the details of just one bike is not beyond most people if you put your mind to it AND you have been pronounced married so you may as well jump in with both feet. I am not a gen 1 fan but it is only a motorcycle after all. I would rather tackle a 500 than a 700-750. Buy a manual and grab the reins. It is winter after all, you have time and weather on your side. Pep talk is over.
