Does anyone know if this supertrapp exhaust can be repacked?

Anyone have any experience with these?

Since the bike is torn apart anyway (charging system), I figured I might as well look into this again. The bike has ~25K miles on it, and from what I can tell, the supertrapps were put on a good 20 years ago, and probably haven't been touched (internally), since.

Standard repack instructions talk about rivets or button-head cap screws. This has neither. I can't find anything that's holding the core into the body, unless it's a pin under the clamp up front. Which I've not been able to get off. I think the SS hose clamp and the aluminum body are pretty much welded together due to the heat cycling over the last 20-odd years...

I have an old SuperTrapp. It has 3 button head bolts on the outside of the can at the rear. You can't miss them.

Did you remove all the disks to see if it comes apart that way?

They can be repacked, Supertrapp was once located in Sacramento and they would provide that service for free back in the day. It is an absolute martha faulker to get one apart withoot damaging it, best to send it to Supertrapp and let them do it in my opinion.

the ones I had had screws at the very back that were rusted pretty bad. I ended up soaked them in wd40 and still broke a couple...

Taking the discs out is easy, and the stainless machine-head cap screws haven't given my any problems (after I initially broke them loose 4 years ago when I bought the bike). With those out, there's nothing apparent that's holding in the core. No screws, rivets, welds, etc. the outside of the can is perfectly smooth. From their forums, they've used:

    - rivets in the supertrapp label (this one is stamped into the body)
    - a pin under the clamp (only thing I haven't checked for)
    - button-head cap screw facing the tire (perfectly smooth back there, no holes in the body)
    - welded core (I'm really hoping not).

Although honestly, worst case, I sell these and pick up the repackable universals. Too bad the left side is rashed up, though... I'd been thinking about ceramic-coating the exhaust to reduce heat, but that's going to make the cans even hotter (heat has to go somewhere). Maybe time for carbon fiber cans... I dunno.

I'll keep poking at these (I'll start with the already rashed-up left can).

Very easily actually. Have the same pipes on my 700. Bought universal packing material from a bike shop. It was Moose brand.

Take the muffler off the pipe that connects it to the headers. Leave the endcap on and use a broomstick through the muffler and tap the broom handle ont he ground. It will take a few trys but it will come apart.

i can clearly see the problem here. This has nothing to do with repacking. You do not have enough disks in these trapps. You need at least 19 disks then the cone tips and it will sound much better and set off all the car alarms in the parking lots.

So the cores are just a press-fit in? huh.. Or do the clamps up front help hold it all together?

I think we have different ideas of "better" here.... :)

Best sound I know of is termingnoni cans on a ducati... I love that deep, mellow sound. Not too loud (unless you want it loud).

The trapps are awesome when I've got it wide open, but they're annoying as hell as idle.

They do sound awful at idle. With no plates and fully open. You can make small children cry at 6000 and up.
